Lastly, I presented data looking at the influence of ‘other’ when attributing mental states, and potential biases in mentalizing processes - are we better able to attribute mental states to people the same-age as us?

Our penultimate speaker was Heather Ferguson (@kent.ac.uk), who presented fascinating data examining mechanisms of social cognitive changes in older age, including social attention, mental state attribution, and visual perspective taking

We then heard from Andrew Surtees (@uob-sop.bsky.social) about how mood can impact children’s mentalizing processes - are children like adults, becoming more egocentric when in happier moods? Is it helpful to be sad?!

Next up, @profjristic.bsky.social told us about the impressive impact of ‘a look’ - detailing the rich information eye gaze can provide, and how well we can interpret intention behind gaze

Kicking off the session, @toschu.bsky.social presented interesting data on the link between developmental trajectories of Theory of Mind and psychopathology, across early childhood and preadolescence

A particular thanks to the fantastic speakers who were part of the ‘Current Perspectives on Mentalizing: Social Cognition Across Contexts’ symposium, covering a range of topics on our understanding of mentalizing processes - and influential factors - across developmental and lifespan perspectives
