It's my casual suspicion that Gmail-style inbox views have made it easy for people to just let nonpersonal emails pile up for people to "look at later", then suddenly they have 5709343 unread messages they'll never comb through.

At a fairly young age (in my 20s when I had a partner with chronic illness) I stopped wishing people “good” medical results and just wished them “something conclusive”.
