Ooh, I do like that! I even have a printing block for it already:

Thanks @plach.bsky.social! for letting @scholarslab.bsky.social display a poster of her 1st yearlong data physicalization: embroidery+beading representing her insomnia, wakefulness, sleep over the course of 2024 (check her #DHmakes posts for 2025's version, w/iterated method+data granularity)

Seth Rockman: 'Experiential research as a method for IDing questions you didn’t know to ask, rather than providing answers you wouldn’t have had...an experiential research method lets us envision more things we want to know about the past' (experiential=do something the way it was done in the past)

Very Extra broadsides are my favorite letterpress genre to make. You can tell this one isn't done yet from there still being significant white space. (Uses my recent acrylic PC & wood skeleton lasercut blocks, which both came out well, as well as my wood Luddite lasercut block) #DHmakes

Don't know if this is useful but I've been wondering re:replicating my home DIY SAD lamp array (the yellow orange lanterns) to improve our dim printshop. "Lumenator" brings up multiple folks who tested lumens/distance (so you don't have to sit 12" from bulbs=migraines) & least cost

Lasercut the Cooper Black Yarn font in the correct direction, 2 sizes @'s and #'s since none of those in our printshop, & glued everything up to very-near-typehigh. Going to test printing today. #DHmakes

I did a couple bookmaking ones in this and it was nowhere near enough! (Btw, your printing work rocks)

Personal goal of lasercutting increasingly large printers fists printing block, & increasing the count of the highest number of puns I've fit into a letterpress broadside

It's 120pt(!) Cooper Black with diagonal striping that can connect to the bit trailing off a ball-of-yarn image block (for @quinnanya.me's YarnLab). Recutting tomorrow, but I guess this allows printing a neat reflected letters effect alongside the legible version? #DHmakes

And also a Portland Frog Hero hat made by @quinnanya.me & necklaces w/ @queermedieval.bsky.social's art lasercut by Quinn! (Wishing it were easier for everyone to send one another art & craft & zines more often, because what a joy)

Very good mail day: @ryancordell.org @deliadraws.bsky.social & other @skeuomorphpress.org students' gorgeous handmade (book, letterpress, illustrations>lino) edition of Ursula K Le Guin's "A Rant about 'Technology'" #DHmakes Some poster versions from the book may still be available? (link in QT)

Traditional letterpress blocking to hold type in place vs pressure from the press (wood block "furniture", key-expanded quoin, strips of wood and lead=reglets & leading, positive lockup bar tightens at bottom) vs sometimes strong magnets are enough (eg wood type or few words in big lead type):

Working on a new print for the Luddite block. A galley full of 72pt Cooper Black lead type is heavy! #DHmakes

Are you looking for this area of the press? I can get photos of Provisional Press (cylinder tabletop press, rollers are just for pressure—ink w/brayer & paper sits on type rather than around cylinder) and BookBeetle (screw press so closest to what you're doing, I think?) too if that's helpful

My first try at lasercutting a Luddite printing block back in spring (below) didn’t turn out well—rough & burnt wood; and bottom of block was uneven, so I couldn’t get an even print. It is nice to notice that I’ve learned things since then about lasercutting & about printing.

More zines (w/links where their creators offer them for free reading) at ZineBakery.com, +links to jump into different parts of the 100s of zines in the catalog: social justice, feminist tech, DH, tutorials, collective action, queer, GLAM, disability justice, & more 📚 Also a DH zine research blog! 💻

This makes a lot of sense to me (I recently found gently-used 72pt Cooper Black type after searching for months)
November 15, 2025 at 9:25 PM
My lasercut 9" Luddite block printed well—the surrounding wood grain looks so good I didn't even need to mask it out of the print. (Never know what to expect the print to look like when cutting w/a different material or settings)

Goudy, goudy! New printshop typecase labels & type finder I created (a 15-page list of just type distributed in standard job cases, not even all the type Virginia Book Arts has?!) have landed (thanks to VBA colleagues for applying labels & helping proof inventory updates):

In the spirit of #DHfails, I also made an acrylic plate showing a Vandercook press w/melt+noise+likely won't print well. The acrylic triangles I cut (for gluing to a board to print confetti texture backgrounds for letterpress) are pretty, though, bc neon translucent acrylic is always pretty

More lasercut print blocks I made: historical dancing skeleton! Beckoning Luddite leaders! #DHmakes

Thanks also to @elikaortega.bsky.social for helping us display the cover of her book "Binding Media: Hybrid print-digital literature from across the Americas"! Élika gave a fantastic talk for @scholarslab.bsky.social in '22 on literary & material experimentations via hybrid print-digital books.

New art in @scholarslab.bsky.social's Text Aisle! Huge thanks to #DHmakes colleague @fosis.bsky.social for letting us exhibit his bright & strong "Pride" banner in our public space ("Make your pride part of history"🌈):

Seen at @virginiabookarts.bsky.social, Liz Schneiders & students' printing using just tetrapaks (eg broth & oat milks cartons!) & tiny plastic Sizzix craft/scrapbooker presses or etching presses #DHmakes
