My senior thesis examined The Book of Margery Kempe in the context of medieval defamation law. I was really interested in how women (particularly mystics) wielded both canon and common law to carve out positions of church-sanctioned religious authority for themselves.

(The year I graduated from undergrad, there was one (1) available tenure track position in medieval literature. In the country.)

I considered a PhD in medieval literature and my advisor said, “Melissa, go to law school. There are jobs there.”
