Sidebar: I once taught ESOL to a Russian guy who said he’d been taking lessons for ten years. His level was below what we would normally expect from someone who’d been learning for ten weeks. Some people have lousy linguistic aptitude, (especially if they take lessons for years but never practice).

I actually think reasonably highly of Duolingo’s pedagogy, but you can game anything.

I’m not a homeschooler myself, but I am aware of homeschool networks that meet in libraries etc so there is opportunity for group learning, social mixing etc. Also clubs and activities outside of schools exist.
