Yep. I was making a loss for the first 4 or 5 years and that was when they said not to send in returns. Now they say they need returns even if you make zero. You wonder if tax rules have changed under new government without telling us? It's frustrating.

I've appealed, but who knows if they'll retract it.

I had one text message saying I had a message on my HMRC account. But I had no reason to have any messages and we all know how many HMRC scams there are! So I, to my detriment, ignored it. The guy I spoke to in the summer even said it was unlikely I'd need to file a return, and to leave it. Grrr.

Then found I had 3 penalty fines for not paying the last four years tax returns in time! I'd spoken to someone in the Tax Office in the summer to check what the NI payments would be, so I could save up to pay the back years, and it appears he restarted my tax file from 2020 without telling me! 😠

I paid originally via paper returns up to 2019 when I was told I didn't need to send in a return if I earned less than 1K, which I was, I stopped filing returns. Now told I needed to send returns to be able to pay the NI. Went online to back file tax returns (they did find my early ones).
