I just realized I think of it in terms of "leaning in" (paying really close attention because you might jump in at any moment) as opposed to "waiting room" mentality, because initiative order means you need to wait your tur

and re: bad guys, we had a fungril rogue and an upper level air elemental sorcerer kicking our collective butts for at least two hours

We were really leaning on the teamwork by the end... my primal origin sorcerer relies on taking stress to cast, so I was getting a lot of support from the party, and we initiated several tagteam rolls to hit those severe thresholds, which is both mechanically and narratively SUPER satisfying

We just spent an entire Daggerheart session in combat (as level 2 characters) and it never felt like a slog. Waiting to see if we rolled with hope or fear caused a lot of fun nail-biting moments but also became a consideration in game-play ("don't roll yet, let me do a thing first!")
