The Japan Conference at the Centre for the Study of Global Japan @uoft.bsky.social was a great success. It was wonderful to see exciting work from the next generation of Japan scholars and exchange views on the future of Japan studies.

According to the IMF, the implied purchasing power parity exchange rate is now 91 yen/US$ (by this measure the yen appreciated ~10% over the last 5 years due to higher inflation in the US). The actual rate is 150. No wonder everything seems ridiculously cheap in Japan right now!

The Japanese text:
"This lavender sachet we previously placed in your room is now enclosed in a bag for you. Please enjoy the scent, and feel free to take it home with you."

The English translation:
"This is not a bath salts. Do not put it in your bath."
