The Day of the Grackle.

Time for some midweek entertainment on the south coast where the Boat-tailed Grackle was doing its thing in Holbury. Part corvid, part wagtail, part peacock too with his swagger & strut. A bird made for Category S 😎

We've had 2 species of Grackles alighting near ports in the last 2 years. Discussions need to happen re: Brown Thrasher, Spotted Towhee, Northern Mockingbird, various Sparrows (Lark, Song & White-throated for starters), House Finch & Evening Grosbeak maybe & that's just for starters.

Really enjoyed a couple of days down south w/the Edgellers, where L & I took in the fun'n'funky Boat-tailed Grackle. It's arrival prompted renewed debate regarding the British List & categorisation of what are undoubteldy wild birds (but w/low to minimal *actual* vagrancy potential).

A few more from the last few days ~ I really liked our pallid Turnip (a very striking looking individual) + a smart Chestnut, a white-spotted Satellite (we get more orange spots) & our latest-ever Dark Arches.

Things winding down a little at CMO HQ this last few days ~ the weather hasn't been conducive to a burst of last-minute, end-of-year moth action. That said, the Sprawler has landed! One of the last NFYs we've been expecting & v. smart it was too.

So many stunning skyscapes at Cley today as showers rolled in & around us as the north wind blew. Offshore, well, it wasn't stellar this morning ~ a nice movement of Eider, 15 Little Gulls, a Bonxie, a couple of RB Mergansers, a few C Scoters.

Anterton Hill is the best set of trees in village. I'd already said to folks at Walsey that it was my last roll of the dice & there had to be one here because I had seen one 25 years ago...!

Here's the antithesis of all those gorgeous shots of Pallas's Warblers from the weekend! Buzzing to find another on the patch, think that's four now, including two here on Anterton Hill, albeit 25 years apart...

One of the nicest sights y'day was watching a local Barn Owls quartering meadows along the edge of the valley. This is a species that still seems to be struggling to return to numbers seen in previous years. One step forward, two steps back...

Last night's roost tallies of Cley egrets ended up with 16 Little & 24 Cattle (flocks of 9 & 15) ~ numbers actually a little lower than expected. Both species show very nicely when they have a pre-roost wash & feed on the scrapes.

I'm getting the word - "jowl".
No bird does a jowl better than Cattle Egret. I remember reading about the CE jowl back in the day (A Twitcher's Diary maybe?) & it stuck. This was one of nine that we saw tonight on Pat's (& the Freshes earlier).

Highlights galore today. A wander along Meadow Lane offered up nice views of a sometimes showy Siberian Chiffchaff (no call heard, but looked the part) but a random 45 minute westerly movement of 15 to 20 Red Kites absolutely stole the show.
