Seeing GRFPs cut by half is heartbreaking. I literally wouldn't have my PhD without GRFP support!

There were already far too few awards for the number of deserving applicants, and now this.
🚨 Not a drill: NSF GRFP results are NOW OUT!!!!!

But...good news and bad news.

👍 I'm *thrilled* for the grad students for whom getting this award will be life-changing, esp now.

👎 # of fellowships went down by 51%

(1000 this year vs. 2036 last year)

Great to see the support from the Boulder community for the science and scientists in our Federal laboratories.

The stretch of road connects NCAR, NOAA, NIST and the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Homes to people doing some of the most important research on Earth and its warming climate.

I commuted this exact stretch of road on a free bus for 3 years and this video hit me smack in the feels.

I have written a short statement responding to mass firings today of #NOAA / National Weather Service (#NWS) staff (which were concentrated among recent hires as well as highly experienced staff who had recently been promoted). Please see below screenshot & below for full text.

Here are some pictures of activities from our first two site visits! The students loved making giant balloons with baking soda and vinegar. They also got to explore how to make a light bulb light brighter and brighter by adding batteries to their circuits :)

A highlight of my PhD has been working with PISEC, an informal science education program. I’ve been part of PISEC for the past 4 years, visiting the same school 10x each semester with fun STEM activities. PISEC was paused because of the Executive Orders. 200 kids, 50 volunteers, 7 schools impacted.

NSF postdocs have had their paychecks cancelled this week with no indication of when they will be re-started. This impacts some of the best scientists and communicators in our field like @chemj.bsky.social. #PayThePostdocs
This week, my science pen-pal opened my letter answering her questions- how much do I get paid, how did I get funded (#NSF), what it looks like to be a scientist.

I didn't think that three weeks after writing my response, those answers may no longer be valid.

How to deal with abysmal #airquality in SoCal due to the fires 🔥
mask up w/ a good mask (N95 or P100)
Avoid outdoor intense activity
Turn on air filters if you have them
a Corsi-Corsi-Rosenthal box *really* worked during NorCal's fires

Sadly, this story about our work in Chemical & Engineering News a few days ago is very timely again due to the #Palisades and #Eaton fires. bsky.app/profile/cenm...
“The impact of smoke can be retained inside homes for a lot longer than you would expect, so the impact of the fire is not gone after the fire is out,” says atmospheric chemist Joost de Gouw of CU Boulder. cen.acs.org/environment/... #chemsky🧪 #scinews
Compounds from wildfire smoke persist inside unburned homes
Researchers find that people returning to their homes after a Colorado fire were probably exposed to many aromatic VOCs

After the Marshall Fire in 2021, there were many questions from residents about the environmental impacts: did the smoke from the fire leave a lasting impact on air quality and health? And how could people protect themselves? Yesterday our groups published 2 papers on this topic. #MarshallFire

I will also be presenting a poster this afternoon about working to connect some field measurements we took this past summer in Denver to space-based remote sensing measurements!

Looking forward to presenting some research we have been doing about air quality forecasting during wildfires. Hope to see some of you there at #AGU24!
