I spent the weekend in Milwaukee doing one of my favorite Extremely Wholesome Activities: the Riverwest 24! It’s a 24-hour bike relay race typically completed in teams and involving the surrounding community. I biked over 60 miles, slept too little, and had a blast with old friends. Always a delight

This weekend in Santa Barbara I have been trying to restore my spirit and soul after a rough semester and prepare my psyche for what’s to come. This giant burrito I ate earlier today from my favorite burrito place on the planet is a vital piece of this work

What an honor and a joy to join in celebrating the amazing career of @alanyliu.bsky.social today. I feel incredibly lucky to have been his student, to have worked closely with him as a collaborator, and to continue to learn from him as a colleague and friend. I can’t imagine my career without him

In case you needed a reminder

Crap day, wtf is even happening, but we moved to a new house over the weekend and it has this view, which my cat likes and so do I.

Also good to see the trans sports ban fail. Tuberville can go jump off a cliff

Many things are bad but there is still cross-country skiing on a perfect sunny day through incredible fluffy snow

Fellow #mla25 goers! I’ll be talking about antiwar lit as part of this roundtable on The Violence of Genre on Thursday. The roundtable looks pretty great, imho

What living in Ithaca has done to me (yes this is apple cider)

One of the more charming aspects of living in Ithaca is the annual Halloween bike parade 🎃

It was a fun game

All hail Muffet, interstellar phenom

My cat has stitches and has to wear a t-shirt to keep her from messing with them. Wearing clothes makes her feel like she has no bones and so she just kind of flops around. Also my partner said she looks like she is dressed to go to PE at a San Fernando Valley elementary school in 1987

If you have any good vibes tomorrow, please send them our way. Our beloved cat Muffet has the first of two major surgeries to treat her mammary cancer (double mastectomy). It’s the best treatment available & it will give her the best shot at the most time but I feel sick about putting her through it

Weirdly fascist state government architecture in Albany

Getting excited for the awesome “Reading the Classroom” seminar I’m part of at ACLA in Montreal next weekend. I’ll be talking about speed reading in the 1960s, but there will be tons of other cool papers too. I mean, look at this lineup! It’s going to be fun

One thing I do appreciate about the Washington Post is that they often feature truly awful photos of Ron DeSantis

Like…what? These people are saying these things *with a sociologist who is examining their interactions* in the room. This is far from the most egregious example

I grew up cross country skiing but haven’t done it since 2016. It was nice to be in some snowy woods again yesterday

I am mostly vegetarian but briefly returned to meat eating in order to eat matzo ball soup in Philadelphia. Somehow the resulting picture is one of the better pics of me taken in awhile. Maybe this should become my new faculty profile pic, just me and a huge matzo ball

Did you know that Philadelphia has a monument to editors and scholars of Shakespeare (erected in 1928)? What?

I’m scheduled for the coveted 7:00-8:15 pm slot this Thursday at MLA. I’ll be talking about BookTok and the contemporary middlebrow and the category of “popular enough” content. I think our panel looks super interesting; unfortunately it is at 7 pm and it is virtual
