School lunches in Aotearoa. The reason we have them is that real children are really hungry through no fault of their own. New Zealand has real poverty, real inequality, real starvation. But we have a Govt that cares only about saving money.

When I was in Nicaragua an Indigenous activist said to me “Indigenous Peoples can’t trust the left or the right. Both sides will try to steal our land and kill us.” I always think about her words. If we can not trust then we make decisions that are not based on trust but what then are they based on?

Love Te Matatini. I’m not there in person this year, having to listen while I work. I’m so proud to see so many former students making their mark as performers. It’s one of those rewards of teaching when you can see former students flourish in their lives and in our whānau, hapū and iwi contexts.

The work year has intensified in Aotearoa. I’m already behind😜. The emails are coming at me fast. Dates are looming, Meetings are being scheduled. I’m already double booked. Oh and the news sucks. I need another holiday and I’m going to watch Te Matatini from home and eat lots of watermelon.

It’s Waitangi Day all over Aotearoa. All the drama may have been in Waitangi but the rest of the country was also commemorating the Day. In Whanganui our protest blanket group gathered at Pakaitore, had a picnic, yarned, talked to whoever walked past and did some blanket stitches.

Kia ora How are you all doing? I’m in writing mode at present and not because I have a deadline but because I want to write. It means I’m rested. That’s a good thing. Enjoy the week wherever you are😊

Dining in Chicago but seeking that taste from home. Can you see it? The dish was called Sea Urchin Bucatini in other words Kina, my favourite summer sea food🙄 Also had blue crab and was yummy but not enough kina for my liking. Lure Fish Bar.

For this platform to work for me I need a sense of community as a collective as well as connection to real people. Its how we build on Indigenous principles of relationality,
reciprocity, respect. Can we create that collectively?

What’s everyone been writing recently other than submissions to Parliament and protest signs? I’ve been working on a poem for the last couple of months, doing some research and thinking and drafting. Also did some research assessments- a form of writing.
