In the era of legal gambling and social media, fan suspicion of sports officiating is higher than it's ever been. The NFL cannot eliminate all non-reviewable judgment calls but when they can eliminate one, they should.

Like all judgment calls, inconsistency between games and officials ensues. But this isn't necessary - it's just how things have always been. The technology exists to allow the NFL to enforce this rule objectively: if the ball is not being snapped before the play clock hits zero, delay of game.

Routinely, plays will happen where the offense snaps the ball after the play clock hits zero. It's up to the officials to decide whether enough time has passed to result in a penalty. It's treated as a judgment call - coaches are not allowed to challenge it.
