The prolific guitarist and bandleader Jeffrey Alexander has two different live releases out this month. Live at Tubby’s, an August 2024 recording with his quintet The Heavy Lidders, is a solid chunk of jamming that includes an expansive cover of David Crosby’s “Almost Cut My Hair.” But Acme Records, Milwaukee, WI – May 11, 2024 is even better. Performed by his Dire Wolves Just Exactly Perfect Sisters Band (also known as DWLVS), it’s a 51-minute improvisation that touches numerous planes while continually ascending. There are hints of spontaneous songcraft, particularly when Marina Lazzara’s singing is involved, but for the most part the band lets their own tide take them wherever. And when they swell into a storm near the end, they reach levels previously visited by the likes of Taj Mahal Travellers and Träd, Gräs och Stenar.
