My only minor hot take…

I really liked this shot from the original. The remaster is obviously on model and more “accurate” but I dig the fisheye lens angle and think it has more style personality to it.

Anyway, very timely for this to happen while another project known to be in a bumpy production is in the news for having "all episodes finished". Don't take this to mean that the job is done because it very much isn't

You gotta have something to deliver even if you know it needs retakes, so having not-really-finished-but-itll-do masters is common. Depending on the platform's needs (a service that needs to tl & even dub will demand materials way earlier than a TV station), those can vary a lot even for final video

The reason why you see different masters for Fate Strange Fake (with CR's missing big redraws) is that everyone has slightly different deadlines, which can mean the world for anime that cuts it close. Episodes don't go from "not existing" to "fully finished", there are potentially many revisions

As we do every year, we gathered creators in all positions related to animation as well as people passionate about art to share the works, old and new, that they've loved the most over the last year. It's finally time for the Sakugabooru Animation Awards 2025! blog.sakugabooru.com/2026/01/23/s...

It's cool that Kyouhei Ishiguro woke up one day and suddenly decided to be the greatest anime opening director. Like yeah now he only makes insane, thematically rich sequences on good anime, where he matches indie adventurousness with polish exclusive to commercial work. Seihantai nation we up

Wrote about how Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc mixes the irreverent spirit of TV animation with insane bombast, making it a representative work of anime's current paradigm but with limiters off. Between that & its addictive tragedy, it has become the movie of the moment blog.sakugabooru.com/2026/01/06/c...

Hyakuemu's acclaim reminded me of the Uoto interview asking about anime influences where they went "idk I don't watch much, but I love Eupho & Shirobako so much they gotta be influential for me". Wanted to rant so much about Kumiko and Myaamoru it split off into a separate blurb. Truly based author
Came across an itw with Chi's author where they confess to not watching much anime but LOVING Eupho and Shirobako. Their only request to the anime team was to get Kensuke Ushio, whose music they first heard in Ping Pong and fell in love with through Koe & Liz and the Blue Bird. We were meant to be
Caught up with Chi / Orb. Ep #03 is outsourced and its technical execution falters a bit, but it's nicely directed. Everything Shimizu's boards & Masato Miyoshi's processing attempt is fundamentally sound and furthers previous themes to conclude that human curiosity is inescapable. Fun twist too!

There's more I could say. I loved the way Iwaisawa uses rotoscoping and how the deliberate distortion of shapes is used for visual storytelling, and how visceral it makes the sport feel. And a lot of cool details related to writing that caught my eye.

The story doesn't disappoint either. Uoto is a rising star, and I loved Chi to bits (it's my favorite new anime of 2025, even). It's not quite as high-concept as that one, you can tell this was written earlier, but it's still mature, and the parallel structure it has works super well.

Hyakuemu was exceptional. I was aware of Iwaisawa and mostly knew what to expect coming in, but I was still blown away. A technical masterwork, very much shot like a live-action movie—Iwaisawa's camera work is stunning—but it never fails to make use of the medium it's in.
