This might be a case of rose tinted spectacles, but do modern political journalists stop to think why the likes of Paxman and the Dimblebys were, and still are, venerated by politicians and public alike?

Any wonder that public trust in politicians is at rock bottom when the default is to question and attack them rather than their policies?

If I formed my affiliation exclusively around my personal identity, I would either not find a good fit or would take every criticism much worse.

When politics becomes the external expression of identity, isolation and groupthink becomes worse and criticism hurts at a much more fundamental level.

I am pretty deep in party politics, but I always try to keep the perspective that the real world exists, other people have different views and compromise and consensus is needed.

It's why I dislike what Labour has done, but don't deny that governing is pretty tough.

There is also a factor that it is internal suppression as well.

Being thoughtful and intelligent regarding policy will inevitably lead to disagreements with those leading a party. This is obviously not helpful so they will be smacked down, causing a reaction of not having heads above the parapet.

I am very much not a Labour supporter, but I want criticism of them to be founded on actual fact and logic not lines that the journalists want to be true or ones that play well with the public.

We wonder why populists are taking a foothold.

Considering the effects on the housing market, it would have a major effect of freeing up cash that can be put back into the economy, used to improve living conditions in old age or saved in a way that is actually productive to the economy.

It would likely be picked apart by those looking for "tax efficiencies" but the removal of stamp duty on "downsizing" beyond 75% of the sale price would be an idea worth exploring.

Housing wealth has become so divorced from liquid wealth that it is possible to be trapped in a zombie state like the above if there is major change.

Faced with a hike in rates but without the liquid capital available to finance a move to "right size" their fiscal position.

"Here is the per mile rate. Full rate for ICE, 25% reduction for hybrid and 50% reduction for full EV"

Allows for these rate reductions to be altered as the vehicle mix.

Not particularly a fan of the complication that comes from having different tax systems depending on the propulsion mode.

Just move all over and rate differently based on ICE/Hybrid/EV.

The deep problem with the OBR is that they have to take the figures stated as true and honest.

They price in the fuel duty escalator and spending cuts like this actually happening when everyone knows that they won't. Markets throw a wobbly because of this, further diverging from the OBR assessment.
