Hotel Familiar EP: https://gordonanderson.bandcamp.com/album/hotel-familiar

Cardiff, Wales.
So I finally got round to seeing Wong Kar-Wai's Chungking Express from 1994, and it's... not that great?

Aimless, almost-romantic melancholy with a few gunshots thrown in.

I actually gave up with half an hour to go, so if it all comes together beautifully at the end, you'll have to tell me.

I've just seen Cardiff City win 3-0.

Not something I get to say very often.

Well from the looks of things.... yes.

Probably the best guide to what it was really like being in the Smiths, from their amiable, straight-talking drummer.

Joyce repeats himself a bit, which a good editor would usually tidy up, but otherwise a decent read which I hammered through in four days.

Also writes touchingly about Andy Rourke.

Can we just call it something else please lads?

First cinema trip in a long while to see The Mastermind. Very Kelly Reichardt in that Alana Haim, as a main supporting character, mostly spoke through silences.

Super depiction of the suburban autumn, full of lovely early 70s detail and good knitwear. Still feels like it was missing something.

A simple message for Caerphilly this week (Senedd/Welsh Gov by-election) and, well, everyone everywhere.

I learned something last night about the first Pink Floyd album.

So, is there a photo of yourself that you feel defines you as a person?

Me: Well, it's not actually a photo of *me*...

Also from 168 Songs of Hatred and Failure, regarding A Design For Life - and I can say, Max Boyce-ishly, "I was there!".

Well, sort of. I actually missed the Manics' appearance and only caught a bit of the choir.

And five years later, just to be a True Fan, obviously... I worked there.

Imperious pose from Rosie cat says hold up your whiskers, admit no imperfection, and the rest of ye kin git tae fuck.

Well this is the perfect gift for the trainspotter Manics fan in your life (it's me).

Bradfield and Wire give insights into the writing and recording process, Keith Cameron writes deftly, and out via the excellent @whiterabbitbks.bsky.social - probably our finest current music & culture publisher.

Record of the day: Gwenno - Y Dydd Olaf.

Finally got this on very reasonably-priced vinyl from the good folks of @spillersrecords.bsky.social who remain Cardiff's much-loved, top-notch hotspot for cee-dees and thirty-threes.

Only took me a decade.

I had no idea they were doing this in train station WH Smiths. Next to the Dan Brown / Richard Osman, this selection of classic literary fiction.

Brookner, Mishima, Atwood, Isherwood... I'm weirdly impressed.

To be honest, I'm not sure I agree.

(I suppose translation software isn't for everyone)

Geraint Thomas had a good send-off in Cardiff today, finishing his career in his hometown.

Record of the day... Blue Beat & Ska - Matumbi (12" single)

I love how much this made me feel like a kid... having my own handwritten certificate, after an hour of helping to feed and water some otters. In Devon. A good day.

Oh the rainbows lost amongst the power lines....

Stopped by the lake for a quick walk, and watched a pair of cormorants diving together for fish.

One then flew off while the other was underwater, and watching the poor thing's confusion after it surfaced - looking around everywhere for its mate, and not finding it - was oddly heartbreaking.

Record of the day.... Betty Davis - They Say I'm Different.

Funky, dirty, wild, and way out ahead of the pack. The world wasn't ready.
