He had been by her side long enough to recognize the anxiety in her eyes around heights. "When have we ever let you fall alone?" "Ja, it'll be fine! Just a little sail through the air and a short tumble in the moon dust," Bertram said with a placating wave of his free hand. "We'll be right there with you. The whole time." "And I'll be right beside you," she chuckled sweetly at them both, acknowledging this checkmate and hiding the warmth spreading across her cheeks. She closed her journal and tossed it on top of the satchel by her feet. "A drift through the air to uncover the secrets of this moon sounds quite lovely, actually." Styrnrael inhaled deeply, attempting to calm her mind the way Seishin had shown her a dozen times. She looked beside her while exhaling, seeing two people she would be glad to fall with. "For science!" she added with a yell that held no echo.

Zorion is a dwarf-firbolg with dark, rich skin, olive green eyes, teal tufted ears, with hair in locs to his shoulders. He is wearing a pink jacket resting on his shoulders as one would a cape, a billowy white shirt, two necklaces, and black pants. The jacket has a red lining with yellow stitching. Dungeons and Dragons character Zorion Al-Fatima pushes up a door that fell on him while debris from a magical public school is flying around him. He's holding his spellbook that is covered in years of scribbles while he smiles back at his companions saying, "I have one more lesson for you today." They are defending the school against would-be attackers who aim to scare off people from studying magic outside of the elitist academy just a few miles away. Magic information wants to be free! This session was particularly one of my favorites because of the Co-Op with is basically a magical public library community college campus??? I'm obsessed! Zorion had a blast teaching a guest lecture there (and even more fun defending it from the invaders!)

Jingle Jangle (2020) brought a kind of Christmas magic to all the character designs, it was a fresh story with timeless designs. Here are three designs of some of the main characters, but even non-speaking roles are dressed in lavish designs. The three main characters from Singin' in the Rain (1952) are dancing. This is one of the only times we see their raincoats and it isn't outdoors. I love how this film plays with what is expected, especially in the 50s, and turns it on it's head with the way these characters are designed. Their designs add to the comedy, but they are also so timelessly romantic. The two main characters of The Birdcage (1996) are seated on a bench. I love their designs SO much, they have this classic yet modern feel, they push gender roles, and how gender is expressed by both of them has had a major impact on me. Natalie Portman as Padme in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) speaking in her iconic red gown, minimalist make-up, and adorned hairstyle. I was always so impressed by how otherworldly Padme appeared but still felt relatable because of the use of cultural icons from Earth (particularly beautiful symbols from Northern Asia) She felt very human while still maintaining the believability of the space opera's setting on a distant planet.

Some of my favorite bits of live action character design. This was such a fun exercise so I'll probably keep adding to this! 💖 Very inspiring to see this all together in one place.
Lee Pace as the Masked Bandit from The Fall (2006) taking off his mask. The color scheme in this movie has always been so inspiring to me. Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia from The Black Panther (2018) dances at the succession ceremony to determine the next leader of Wakanda. Everything about this scene inspires me but the way color and form give a sense of belonging to her tribe was truly spectacular. Whoopie Goldberg as Guinan in Star Trek: Next Generation (1987-1994) smiles, and laughs while wearing a broad hat. Guinan's design had a profound impact on my own art. She was like a walking painting to me and every time she showed up in an episode I Paid Attention The ensemble cast of Cinderella (1997) poses together in front of one of the decadently decorated sets. From hair and make-up to their lavish costumes, the beautiful lighting throughout the film, and diverse cast, the character designs in this film are a stand out to me. They all literally walked out of Gustav Klimt's paintings, their costumes and sets even have some of Klimt's iconic geometric patterns hidden throughout.

These 4 are all very inspirational and influential for my design of Styrnrael #wolqotd Jester, Amir, Nightcrawler, and Will Turner.
Jester Lavorre from Critical Role: The Mighty Nien holding a journal and a fountain pen. She was an inspiration when I created Styrn, long before I watched the series! Amor Halgal from The Bride's Story standing on a horse saddle somewhere looking over the steppe. Amir may have a very different life than Styrn but I think their personalities and interests are the same. Nightcrawler from X-Men defiantly leaps ahead with a sword drawn. His overall appearance and temperament was a definite inspiration for Styrn. Plus, X-Men was my first real fandom experience when I was a kid so it's extremely meaningful to me! Will Turner from Pirates of the Caribbean smirks in his cap and dashing pirate hat. His family experience, logical mind, connection to pirates, and his fantastic costumes are all very influential for Stryn.
