The Daily Chronicle continued to be a progressive Liberal paper. In 1930 it merged with the Daily News to become the News Chronicle and was the last major daily paper to support the Liberal Party until its demise in 1960.

He resigned from parliament on his appointment as a Metropolitan Police Magistrate but returned to the House of Commons in 1945 gaining one of the few seats Labour lost in their landslide election and holding the seat until his death.

The following year with Liberal reunion achieved and Evans adopted as the official candidate, Morris stood as an Independent Liberal and won the seat.

Although chiefly remembered as a politician, he also enjoyed distinguished careers as an academic, teaching at UCL and serving as Rector of Glasgow University and as a writer. His collection of essays Obiter Dicta were well regarded in their time and are still well worth reading.

As Chief Secretary for Ireland he achieved some success in Ireland with the Irish Universities Act 1908 and the Irish Land Act 1909. His career ended in failure, resigning in 1916 in the wake of the Easter Rising.
