#WIPWednesday • Less progress this week since I was able to bump up to a moderate routine and also decided to reconfigure all my routines. More journaling is getting done than anything else at the moment. #SciArt #embroidery

#WIPWednesday • I started the other colours in the Milky Way, but because I keep drawing sections on the sulky it looks like a mess! So here’s the hoop guts where you can actually see the colours. #SciArt #embroidery

#WIPWednesday • I’m almost done the 1st pass of white on the Milky Way. The sulky didn’t print as well as I hoped but it’s giving me something to draw the various parts on. I have two different source photos to work from so it’s a bit complex. #SciArt #embroidery

It’s #WorldPneumoniaDay. Here is my #SciArt lung #embroidery, she breathed (2018) with a poem about ease of breath stitched between the bronchi.

Making art in the midst of the excellent art at one of my specialist’s offices.

For #InvisibleDisabilitiesWeek: One of my more debilitating symptoms is hyperacusis—a sensitivity to sound & vibration—that causes pain & extreme fatigue. This #embroidery, sensorium (2018), depicts that hypersensitivity. I also wrote a piece of music about this. Listen here: ko-fi.com/s/872acbb154
In the centre of some bone white linen, there is a spine embroidery in thick satin stitch. Emanating from the spine are thick burgundy lines in an undulant oval shape. This oval is bisected across the middle. In the top half, there is a section outlined in burgundy filled with coiling blue lines and a similar section in the bottom half. The rest of the undulant oval is filled with fine coiling burgundy lines. The spine is very straight, the rest of the embroidery is very coiled and busy. Lia’s initials are stitched in fine thread the same colour as the cloth at the bottom right.

For #InvisibleDisabilitiesWeek: The paresthesia/tingling in my hands doesn't usually interfere with my day to day but it worsens during my migraines. This #symptomatology #embroidery maps one of those days: push, pull, & tingle (2018)
An embroidery on deep purple linen. There is a purple outline of a feminine right hand from the side, palm up, fingers curled slightly inward. There are many tiny white French knots covering the fingertips and light blue, gold, and navy French knots on parts of the palm. There are fine filigree lines connecting many of the French knots and white strands of thread strung from each fingertip to an apex above the hand. There is a starburst floating above the palm in white and light blue.

I think I can officially declare this pencil defunct
A wooden and metal pencil holder next to a very small stub of broken lead pencil. There’s no way the stub will fit in the holder or a pencil sharpener anymore because it’s so short.

For #InvisibleDisabilitiesWeek: One of my more disconcerting #MECFS symptoms is the paresthesia/tingling on my tongue. It worsens whenever I overextend myself. This #symptomatology #embroidery maps how my tongue usually feels: paresthesia (tongue 2) 2018
An embroidery on black linen. There is the outline of an open mouth with the tongue sticking out. The lips are outlined in dark pink, the tongue in paler pink, & the teeth in bone white. There are sections outlined on the tongue in thick blue lines. The tip & sides of the tongue are covered in tiny red, orange & white dots. In the center there is an hourglass shape of tiny pink dots. There are taut lines of thin dark blue thread stretched from the tip of the tongue to the sides, from the sides of the tongue to the lips & palate, & from the palate to the tip of the tongue.

#WIPWednesday • I have a slew of appointments the next few weeks so this #embroidery piece is getting more attention. Will I finish this section before my surgery in early November? We shall see.

It’s definitely pubic hair. The trapezoid is 14cm wide along the top, 7cm wide along the bottom, and 8cm tall. There’s white chalk markings within the hairs. An hourglass-shaped needle minder that reads “this is taking forever” is attached to the cloth.

For #InvisibleDisabilitiesWeek: May Thurner Syndrome (#IliacVein compression syndrome) seems to be a common comorbidity with #MECFS. This #symptomatology #embroidery is based off a venogram of my stent: deep dilation (2025)

A section on the left branch is outlined in darker grey-green split stitch with a honeycomb filling stitch stent on it. Intricate turbulence is stitched in single strand dark aquamarine backstitch within the iliac vein. Three blocks of text are stitched in dark grey. They read: Branches of the internal. For #InvisibleDisabilitiesWeek: This #symptomatology #embroidery, neuraesthenia (2017) explores the sensation of post-exertional malaise (PEM), the hallmark symptom of #MECFS. When I overextend myself physically, cognitively, or emotionally, I am too fatigued to even wash myself.
An embroidery on pale natural linen. The pale outline of a woman’s lower legs and feet, heels together, toes apart is centered. From the soles of the feet, thick red/orange lines coil beneath. From the big toes moving upwards, thick blue and off-white lines rise up through the inner calves and branch off at the knees. These lines coil and intertwine in a navy brain-like shape, and then move back down in wavy lines like a wide skirt around the ankles.

This week is #InvisibleDisabilitiesWeek. My chronic illnesses are an invisible disability, especially #MECFS. ME/CFS is a neuroimmune disease that has a worse quality of life measurement than any other. This #Sciart #symptomatology #embroidery, body map, maps out my symptoms as they were in 2016.

An outline of a naked woman is embroidered on linen in the same bone white colour as the linen. She stands legs together, her right hand covering her groin, her left hand, palm up, extended slightly to her side. She looks to the right. Her entire body except for her belly is covered in intricate markings representing different neurological sensations. Her face is a mask of green lines, feathery grey lines cover her shoulders and chest. There is a thick band of intricate burgundy stitching around her waist. Her forearms and hands are covered in thick blue undulant lines. Her right leg has bands of burgundy along the muscles, with small dots around them. Her inner left leg has a thick line of blue running up it, with thin branches spreading towards her outer leg.

There are blue filigree lines coming from the sides of the head outline towards the centre of the face. A fine off white line outlines the head and moves down the neck and out along the arms. On the centre chest is a cluster of off-white crosses and a few sparse crosses are around the head and shoulders as well. woman in skull (2016) An embroidery on bone coloured linen of the inside of a human skull looking down from a cut open top done in thin black thread. The textures make it look like the Vesalius woodcut it is based on. In the bottom left corner of the skull there is the tiny silhouette of a woman done in bronze thread. Autumnal Mitosis Sampler (2024) Two cells dividing embroidered on off white linen. A circle of brown stem stitch is the cell membrane, the corona radiata is in bright orangey yellow zig zag chain stitch. The edges of the dividing cells are in bright orange split stitch. The nucleolus of each cell is in bright yellow bullion stitch. The cytoplasm is stitched in variegated orange/brown thread in a mix of seed stitch and French knots. Lia’s initials are stitched in off white whipped back stitch. thrum (2016) An embroidery on off-white linen. A thyroid cartilage is stitched in thick black thread like a woodcut. Below it the word “thrum” is stitched in ochre thread in a type-like font. To the bottom right the initials L.P. are stitched in thin thread the same colour as the linen.

It’s #WorldThrombosisDay. I woke up with a DVT one morning in 2019 and discovered I have May-Thurner syndrome, an anatomical anomaly that compresses the iliac vein. A stent was inserted to correct the anomaly. Here’s my #SciArt #embroidery of that experience: deep dilation (2025)
