A letter sent from Gerrit Smith to Daniel O'Connell (The Liberator newspaper, 25/8/1843)
The fears of the American abolitionists had become excited, had, indeed, began to run high, that American slaveholders would prove themselves able to gag even Daniel O'Connell. But your late speech, which has blistered these tyrants from head to foot, and filled this land with their howlings and execrations, has put an end to all those fears. You perhaps, wonder why so little money is sent to you by American abolitionists. Be assured that it is not from the want of a lively interest in your efforts to obtain, by peaceable means, for Ireland, the right of making, and being governed by, her own laws. Be assured, too, that it is not because they think that they have not the right to express this interest. The sympathy of unsophisticated man for his brother man naturally, necessarily, and therefore rightfully, travels across national as well as city or village boundaries, and wherever that sympathy proceeds, its appropriate expressions and proofs have, of course, the right to follow. If I have the right to feel pity for a hungry and naked family in France, then I have also the right to follow up the pity, by sending a barrel of flour or a roll of cloth to that destitute family. The doctrine, that the conventional lines, which men have drawn upon the earth's surface, decide the question for whom we may and for whom we may not feel, is utterly repugnant to an unselfish and unspoiled heart. To tell me that I may not love him who dwells on the north side of the St. Lawrence, as well as him who dwells on the south side of that river; and that because a man is a Canadian, I may feel less pity for his woes than if he were an American, is to tell me what my nature and the God of my nature flatly contradict. I sympathise with your countrymen under their oppressions, for I hold that a people are grievously oppressed, who, not to speak of other wrongs they may be suffering, are denied entire freedom of religious conscience. But, were the Irish suffering no oppression, I should sti… Having said what are not the reasons, I will now say what are the reasons why the American abolitionists send you so little money. In the first place, we are generally poor. It is proverbial, as you know, that the rich feel not the need of revolutions. They are content with the present order of things. Especially are they unwilling to embark in a revolution so odious as that which American abolitionists, at the certain expense of having their names cast out as evil,' are laboring to achieve. In the second place, we cannot connect ourselves with the Repeal Associations of this country; for, being principled and impartial lovers of liberty, we cannot consent to associate, for the advancement of her cause, with those who we know hate her, and who will never even seem to be her friends, save when some selfish calculation suggests the expediency, or when passion or prejudice impels them in that direction. I need not say to you that our Repeal Associations are generally pro-slavery, and that whilst they talk against the oppression of the Irish-an oppression which, however sore, still leaves to its victims their manhood they do, nevertheless, both talk and act for the infinitely greater oppression which turns millions of their own countrymen from immortal, God-like beings, into cattle and merchandise. That this is the general character of these associations, must be evident to you from the fact that many of the communications which they made to you abound in pro-slavery sentiments, and that none of them give their sanction to anti-slavery truth. Your speech, to which I alluded at the beginning of my letter, having called from these associations expressions of great bitterness toward yourself and the abolitionists in general, has done much to develop the atrocious and horrible pro-slavery character of those associations. It may be, that the abolitionists of this country will form Repeal Associations. But whether they shall contribute as Associations or as individuals, I have no doubt that the little sums which they shall send you out of their deep poverty,' will, accompanied by the power of their consistent example and the blessing of God, be worth far more to the great and good cause, which you are leading on to a bloodless and sublime victory, than the far greater sums which the oppressors of God's poor in this land have the audaciousness to send to the oppressed in yours. I should love to send you a donation of one thousand dollars; but, I am sharing so largely in American embarrassments and losses, that I must content myself with sending you one hundred; and even this is from the income of my wife's estate. She parts with it, however, willingly-gladly; for her heart is no less true than my own, to the cause of American liberty; and if she cannot say that her, as well as my maternal grandmother, was born in Cork, nevertheless such a link between her heart and Ireland is not necessary to make that heart faithful to the cause of Irish liberty also. I leave this letter open, and request my esteemed friend Lewis Tappan, Esq. of the city of New-York, to forward it to you, after he shall have enclosed in it a bill of exchange worth one hundred dollars. If you knew the immeasurable influence of your example on our endeavors to terminate American oppression, you would pardon me for closing my letter with the earnest prayer, that Daniel O'Connell may have grace given him from God to stand firm in the cause of liberty-of American as well as Irish liberty! Obviously as a Tipperary man I’m overjoyed by the incredible win today, but as an aside can I just call on the Cork County Board, the GAA and the Gardai to address the flying of an overt symbol of white supremacy & racism on Hill 16 today. Crazy that this is still going on and apparently tolerated.

The Irish middle passage, for but one example, was as foul as my own, and as dishonorable on the part of those responsible for it. But the Irish became white when they got here and began rising in the world, whereas I became black and began sinking. The Irish, therefore and thereafter-again, for but one example-had absolutely no choice but to make cer- tain that I could not menace their safety or status or identity: and, if I came too close, they could, with the consent of the governed, kill me. Which means that we can be friendly with each other anywhere in the world, except Boston. What a monumental achievement on the part of those heroes who conquered the North American wilderness! The price the white American paid for his ticket was to become white-: and, in the main, nothing more than that, or, as he was to insist, nothing less. This incredibly limited not to say dimwitted ambition has choked many a human being to death here: and this, I contend, is because the white American has never accepted the real reasons for his journey. In 1876 Boutwell was appointed as Chairman of the Mississippi Committee charged with investigating the elections of 1875 where white paramilitaries (Red Shirts) loyal to Democrats and ex-Confederates terrorised black voters and non-democrats to ensure white supremacist rule.
RESOLUTION ORDERING THE INQUIRY. By the Senate of the United States of America: IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES, March 31, 1876. Resolved, Whereas it is alleged that the late election in Mississippi (in 1875) for members of Congress, State officers, and members of the legislature was characterized by great frauds committed upon and vio- lence exercised toward the colored citizens of that State and the white citizens disposed to support their rights, and especially that the col- ored voters, on account of their color, race, or previous condition of serv- itude, were by intimidation and force deterred from voting, or com- pelled to vote, contrary to their wishes, for candidates and in support of parties to whom they were opposed, and their right to the free exercise of the elective franchise, as secured by the fifteenth amendment to the Constitution, thus practically denied and violated, and that such intim- idation has been since continued for the purpose of affecting future elections; and Whereas the people of all the United States have an interest in and a right to insist upon the enforcement of this constitutional amendment, and Congress, having the power to enforce it by appropriate legislation, cannot properly neglect the duty of providing the necessary legislation for this purpose: Therefore Resolved, That a committee of five Senators be appointed by the Chair to investigate the truth of these allegations, and to inquire how far these constitutional rights have in the said election been violated by force, frand, or intimidation, and to inquire and report to the Senate before the end of the present session whether any, and, if so, what, legislation is necessary to secure the said colored citizens the free enjoyment of their constitutional rights; and that said committee be empowered to visit said State, to send for persons and papers, to take testimony on oath, and to use all necessary process for these purposes.

On 31 May 1866 George S. Boutwell spoke in favour of racial equality in Faneuil Hall in Boston. During this speech he chastised the members of the Irish American community who were pro-slavery before the war and who now opposed suffrage and civil rights for African Americans.
But I have not been an inattentive observer of passing events. They have hated despotism; but they have hated despotism, as I understand them, chiefly because they suffered from the despotic power of the tyrant, and not because they loved liberty. When the Irish people, and when our own people, have accepted the great truth, that it is not enough to hate the tyrant, but that it is necessary to love liberty for the sake of liberty, then we and they will have a just right to contend for liberty, and there will be good reason for believing in our success in the contests in which we are engaged. ...reprobated, nothing which will be more severely and justly condemned by history, than the character and conduct of those of the Irish people who have come here to enjoy with us the liberties of this continent, and have allied themselves with the traitors and enemies of freedom, to some extent for the overthrow of the government and institutions of the country, and who now to-day lend willing aid to those who seek to deprive the negro of his just rights. While the redemption of Ireland from the oppression of Great Britain commends itself to the common sense and affections and sympathies of the people of this country, you of the Irish race can never expect to enlist our sympathies actively in your behalf, or engage our co-operation or secure our prayers, our prayers, until you show yourselves, not the haters of tyranny merely, but the lovers of liberty as well, ready to aid in securing for other men those rights which you seek for yourselves.

While in 1868, The Irish Republic, a Fenian Brotherhood newspaper in New York, shunned the racist policies of the Democratic party which had almost total Irish Catholic support (and voted as a bloc against black suffrage) to endorse the Fifteenth Amendment. "Liberty, to be just, must be universal."

In 1841 approx 60,000 Irish people signed an anti-slavery address composed by the Hibernian Anti-Slavery Society. It was addressed to the Irish American community and it demanded that "Irishmen and Irishwomen! Treat the colored people as your equals, as brethren."
Dear Friends : You are at a great distance from your native land ! A wide expanse of water separates you from the beloved country of your birth—from us and from the kindred whomyou love, and who love you, and pray for your happiness and prosperity in the land of your adoption. We regard America with feelings of admiration: we do not look upon her as a strange land, nor upon her people as aliens from our affections. The power of steam has brought us nearer together ; it will increase the intercourse between us, so that the character of the Irish people and of the American people must in future be acted upon by the feelings and dispositions of each. The object of this address is to call your attention to the subject of slavery in America—that foul blot upon the noble institution and the fair fame of your adopted country. But for this one stain, America would indeed be a land worthy your adoption ; but she wnll never be the glorious country that her free Constitution designed her to be, so long as her soil is pol- luted by the foot-prints of a single slave. Slavery is the most tremendous invasion of the natural, inalienable rights of man, and of some of the noblest gifts of God, "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." What a spectacle does America present to the people of the earth ! We are all children of the same gracious God ; all equally entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We are told that you possess great power, both moral and political, in America. We entreat you to exercise that power and that influence for the sake of humanity. You will not witness the horrors of slavery in all the States of America. Thirteen of them are free, and thirteen are slave States. But in all, the pro-slavery feeling, though rapidly decreasing, is still strong. Do not unite with it: on the contrary, oppose it by all the peaceful means in your power. Join WITII THE ABOLITIONISTS EVERY WHERE. They are the only consistent advocates of liberty. Tell every man that you do not understand liberty for the white man, and slavery for the black man; that you are for liberty for all, of every color, creed, and country. The American citizen proudly points to the National Declaration of Independence, which declares that all mankind are born free and equal, and are alike entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. - Aid him to carry out this noble declaration, by obtaining freedom for the slave. Irishmen and Irishwomen ! treat the colored people as your equals, as brethren. By all your memories of Ireland, continue to love liberty—hate slavery cling by the aboltionists—and in America you will do honor to the name of Ireland. The destruction of the past, or rather of the social mechanisms that link one's contemporary experience to that of earlier generations, is one of the most characteristic and eerie phenomena of the late twentieth century. Most young men and women at the century's end grow up in a sort of permanent present lacking any organic relation to the public past of the times they live in. This makes historians, whose business it is to remember what others forget, more essential at the end of the second millennium than ever before. But for that very reason they must be more than simply chroniclers, remembrancers and compilers, though this is also the historians' necessary function. In 1989 all governments, and especially all Foreign Ministries, in the world would have benefited from a seminar on the peace settlements after the two world wars, which most of them had apparently forgotten.

The introduction to Stoddard’s
book was written by Madison Grant, another leading American eugenicist and white supremacist.

Madison Grant at one point received actual fan mail from Hitler, who described his racist work "The Passing of the Great Race" as "his Bible".

Alfred Rosenberg, the influential Nazi ideologue re: race, found the term "Untermensch" in the German translation of Lothrop Stoddard's work.

Stoddard was a Harvard educated historian, eugenicist and white supremacist.

Was reading Diarmuid Ferriter’s new book and came to this section that covers some of my work on Ireland and Slavery. I saw the 212 endnote and said I would check it out. But for some reason there is no proper reference to anything I’ve published just a bare URL pointing to one of my blog lists 🤷🏻‍♂️

During the 1640s the Anglo Barbadian planter Richard Ligon mentioned that the slaveowner class sought to breed enslaved Africans (‘Negres’) like livestock, listing them alongside horses and cattle.
