Finally caught up with my NJ nemesis bird today 🪶
August 26, 2023 at 10:54 PM
My favorite picture from a pelagic two years ago - a Black-capped Petrel. At the time the only Pterodroma petrel on the NJ list. On last year’s August 24h pelagic we added Bermuda Petrel to the state list. What will this weekend’s bring?

Couple birds 🪶 from today - a Laughing Gull with a fiddler crab claw stuck in its nostril and a Laughing Gull trying to steal from a Least Tern

🪶After dinner we visited a dry forested part of the island for the endemic Puerto Rican Nightjar, which was nice enough to stop both for photos and recordings. This was my favorite recording I got - https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/548168931

🪶From Rio Abajo we visited a friend of Gabriel's with an amazing hummingbird feeder setup. Dozens of Puerto Rican Mangos, Green Mangos, and Puerto Rican Emeralds darted from feeder to feeder and fought over territory.

🪶Day 3 started with some Cave Swallows nesting under an overpass, then on to one of the highlights of the trip - the reintroduction program for the endangered Puerto Rican Parrot in Rio Abajo
July 27, 2023 at 10:55 PM
🪶These included Pin-tailed Whydah, Saffron Finch, Orange-cheeked Waxbill, Indian Silverbill, Scaly-breasted Munia, and Venezuelan Troupial. After dinner, we went looking for the first of the nocturnal endemics, the Puerto Rican Owl. It took a couple of stops, but eventually one flew in

From there we went to the beach, where several stunning White-tailed Tropicbirds were flying around. After a lunch break, we visited a couple grassy fields, where we saw a number of the many introduced species on the island 🪶

🪶Puerto Rican Vireo, Puerto Rican Bullfinch (who are extremely good at staying out of sight), Yellow-faced Grassquit, and West Indian Whistling-Duck
July 27, 2023 at 10:43 PM
After fueling up, we stopped a several small locations known to our fantastic local guide, Gabriel Lugo. Highlights included Puerto Rican Lizard-Cuckoo, Puerto Rican Mango, Green Mango, Puerto Rican Tody, Black-whiskered Viero, Adelaide's Warbler, White-cheeked Pintail, Loggerhead Kingbird...🪶

🪶Day 2 of the trip started at a small patch of trees behind a rest stop, where a small group of Puerto Rican Woodpeckers were flying around, along with some Puerto Rican Spindalis, Puerto Rican Orioles, and the ever present Bananaquits. I love Bananaquits. How can you not? There's 40+ subspecies!
July 27, 2023 at 10:35 PM
Finishing up at the botanical garden, an introduced White-winged Parakeet and a very chonky Zenaida Dove. Other endemics we had that day were Puerto Rican Woodpecker and Puerto Rican Oriole, though I didn't get photos until later. 🪶
July 27, 2023 at 10:27 PM
Also that day were Puerto Rican Flycatcher, the first of the Puerto Rico endemics that we saw, a Red-legged Thrush who was doing Turdus thrush things and didn't want to come out of the shadows, a Red-tailed Hawk of the nominate subspecies, and a White-crowned Pigeon.

I realized I never did a post with some #birds from my Puerto Rico trip back in March with NJ Audubon and Wildside. It's well past time I rectified that oversight. So from the first day, at the UPR Botanical Garden, we have a Black-faced Grassquit and a Pearly-eyed Thrasher
