Toymaker is set in Salamanca in 1910, so I needed a document that showed what the chapel looked like as accurately as possible.
While searching online, I came across this postcard, which dates around 1910:

Until 1901, when Professor García Boiza reported his discovery. It wouldn’t be until 1950 that its restoration began, led by the architect José Gudiol Ricart.

After all this drama, they didn’t really know what to do with the vault, but it seems that some students pushed for keeping it. So the University decided to build a false ceiling to preserve it, even if it meant covering it up. And so, the vault sank into oblivion…

The vault was restored by Juan de Yprés, who didn’t follow the original technique, damaging the painting. On top of that, in 1761 the University decided to adapt the chapel to a late Baroque style, which compromised the integrity of the entire vault, leading to two-thirds of it being lost in 1764.

In 1506, the separation between the library and the chapel below was removed, turning the chapel into a much more open space with the Cielo de Salamanca crowning its ceilings. It’s possible that during this process, the vault was damaged.

This vault was part of the University of Salamanca’s Library. It’s attributed to the painter Fernando Gallego, and it seems to have been created between 1483 and 1486 (though some sources date it a few years later).
This is how it would have looked like before the events that would unfold next.

While researching, I stumbled upon a captivating story: the Cielo went from being a work admired by the students who frequented the library to falling into oblivion for more than 100 years, only to be discovered a few years ago.

I'm working on an environment for Toymaker: “Cielo de Salamanca.” This is a place the game’s minstrel frequently visits in search of inspiration.
I don’t usually make posts like this, but here’s a thread🧵 where I’ll share some of the fascinating things I’ve learned about the evolution of this place:
