In English, the norm is that a single vowel in English followed by a double consonant is pronounced short. You wouldn't say 'bahty' for 'batty'. But see Andrew Craig's comment

As usual my choice ('trillion') doesn't get a look-in. See also the g-word for the two previous years (people were actually arguing over the definition - what more do lexicographers want!). And - a few years back now - 'content' (noun)
