Seth, did you find it? Where?

And did you like it?

That there is a standard usage in the sense of most common is inescapable, independent of any formal effort to codify

That we notice variations is, too

(How many times people have said to me, you don’t sound like a Noo Yawker I can’t tell you)

But surely we can notice we’re having them

5. And, rules vary by geography — eg “different from” vs “different to” on opposite sides of the Atlantic — and change over time

All to say: I am a creature of my time and very particular education.

I do notice other usage. But I try to at least notice my noticing and try to reflect.

3. Writing “correctly” also says “I’m serious and please take me seriously”. “I belong” in this journal/company/whatever because that’s how people here communicate

4. BUT holding this standard can also be snobby, exclusionary, dismissive, especially when these rules are not widely taught

I’ve been thinking about this. Quite a few things:

1. To learn grammar is to learn to analyze how words and language work. This should make one’s reading and writing better. Clarity, as you say.

2. This kind of close analytical work is a skill applicable beyond reading and writing

Why do you think grammar is important? I have an opinion, but I’m curious about yours.

Meaning, when things enter the curriculum, I understand things have to leave. I’m ok with the insane amount of time I spent on penmanship being reprogrammed. Less sure about grammar, etc

I’m old enough to have gotten a fair amount of grammar in English class, but I only learned verb tenses taking French and things like the subjunctive from Latin and French.

That having been said, I had to teach myself Excel (and its predecessor, VisiCalc) so there’s that.

Or you could… ask
