DRM is not an Amazon-only thing, other book sellers also have it - each version is tailored to a specific seller. IMO, DRM is the number one cause of ebook piracy. Music has platforms like Bandcamp and Ampwall where you can buy/download industry standard mp3s - a similar platform for books is needed

Until people can buy ebooks that are DRM free and which owners can download, move, take personal backups of and transfer to ANY device then some people are going to pirate them. Its not great but I do understand why some people do it. Your enemy is not pirating, its DRM.

If authors are selling via Amazon they they will be DRM-enabled. If they're DRM-enabled then a book can can only ever be accessed via Kindles and can be altered or removed from a users Kindle without their knowledge or permission. This is not ownership.
