Why on earth are people trying to do these kinds of things with garbage "rules of thumb" involving random magic numbers and conversion ratios that make it more complicated than just doing a basic equation and not discarding the units

I don't understand why the words have become so mixed up with some people. I had the most confusing conversation ever with a friend where he talked about topping but it made no sense until I found out that he called being predator "topping".
