I'm not a dentist but I've been brushing with baking soda for two or three years, and my dentist is very happy with the results. The key is not using too much baking soda when you brush.

You need to be gentle with your teeth, and if you want professional whitening done go to a dentist. Whitening toothpastes aren't good for teeth long term and can lead to sensitivity.
Most importantly: if you're planning on making a drastic change to your routine: talk to your dentist.

5. When to wait
When you eat, especially acidic foods, your enamel is temporarily softer than normal afterwards. Brushing during this time can hurt your enamel, so it's recommended to swish with water and wait 30 minutes before you brush. This is important if you're a soda drinker.

4. Proper technique
Most people think an electric toothbrush cleans better, but a manual is just as good if you use proper technique. Dentists typically recommend electric toothbrushes due to some folks lacking hand dexterity.
This is a video explaining it.

3. Frequency and duration
Most people don't spend enough time brushing their teeth. You're supposed to brush at least twice daily 30 minutes after meals, two to three minutes spent per session recommended. I personally put on music as I brush as a timer and to make it fun.

2. Toothbrushes
Just like people think a more abrasive toothpaste cleans better, most think a firmer brush cleans better. This is not true: it's better to use a soft or extra soft brush so you don't erode and damage your enamel. A soft/extra soft toothbrush gives you a nicer clean.

The Relative Dentin Abrasion scale rates how abrasive a dentifrice is on your enamel. I personally have been using baking soda plus ACT fluoride mouth rinse for the last 2ish years seeing as mint toothpaste makes me throw up, but If that isn't a problem a baking soda toothpaste is ideal.

1. Toothpaste
There's a common misconception that a more abrasive/whitening toothpaste cleans better. This is not true: whitening toothpaste can erode enamel with too much pressure over time. It's better to use a gentle toothpaste that has a lower RDA rating if you have sensitive teeth.
