Isn’t it nice that he kinda felt bad about owning people? WHAT?!?!
All that to say, I hate the “man of his time” excuse. Our great American “heroes” knew better and they either didn’t do enough to stop slavery/Indian deportation, or worse, happily perpetuated it.

Buckley doesn’t let Clark off the hook because he felt bad about these things. Clark wasn’t a man of his time. That’s a myth. He knew better and yet he didn’t do enough.

Buckley doesn’t let Clark off the hook because he felt bad about these things. Clark wasn’t a man of his time. That’s a myth. He knew better and yet he didn’t do enough.
