There is a REAL way: Enforce time keeping just like Gary begged us to in AD&D 1e (page 37).
"Failure to keep careful track of time expenditure by player characters will result in many anomalies in the game."
Which is exactly what you're talking about.
A stamina system is just wonky timekeeping.

Anything could be friendly unless it was nonsapient opposed to life like undead.
Occupied castles were common (this is historically accurate), but may or may not be friendly: It's up to the players and also how the GM plays the result of the tables. Below this as the rules for avoiding encounters.

Trad RPGs skill systems need an overhaul. Success/fail + skill name should not be a foundational pillar of a system, it should sit ON foundational pillars.
Instead, it sits on the GM.
This keeps skill systems oversimplified because any additional mechanics is seen as adding to GM burden.

@unboxedcereal.bsky.social I decided to glance at Reddit and found this gem that I'm sure you will just love; specifically the line: "In role playing games the tool we use to overcome the unnecessary obstacle is storytelling."
The one just after it clarifies he really does mean story telling.

I saw your post and then minutes later saw this. Relevant.

Levels need to exist because that's what pathfinder writers think an RPG is. Yet mechanically or narratively there's no explanation nor exploration of what it means for the setting that some people have guns that atomise you and some people have laser glocks. Levels just EXIST.

Yes. Had this exchange recently (see pic). My reply was not taken well.
There's a huge swathe of the community who thinks Roleplaying = Play acting detailed descriptions; nothing else. CERTAINLY NOT THE MECHANICS. To them the mechanics don't "speak" of happening in the fantasy world.

Infinite maps in mere minutes!

Gygax: "Here are the rules and tables for making dungeons fast because this is a feature complete game."

Later Game designers: "Yeah the GM is just supposed to make detailed maps without support that's normal. :))"

I'm convinced my two online players of 5 years are the best roleplayers alive. They can effortlessly play MULTIPLE characters at once.
I don't need to call for rolls; they know the rules. They want to do something, they roll as appropriate. I'm spoiled as a GM. One depicted himself as a TI-84 here:

Absolutely. But that's what people think an RPG is now.

Yeah I agree. Now, EABA kind of did this with Stuff! It's a book for designing... stuff. Lots of stuff. Weapons, vehicles, gadgets, creatures and even civilisations. Excellent layout too.
Near there back there's a universale scale chart and a damage conversion table for other popular generic systems
