@jrollans but lots of people seem to object to that idea. I can't see the negatives, it'd be a capability that could be used. Not a mandatory for everyone. You still be able register separate accounts everywhere if you don't like using one for many things.

@jrollans I've a couple of times suggested making Mastodon also have SSO properties, I.e. using your Mastodon account for authentication on services that integrate with that.

Then you could set up all kinds of things like Lemmy in your example or Flohmarkt for "marketplace".

I like the idea of […]

@jrollans that would be a massive game changer to be able to have groups in a social context without predatory oligarchs. Then you'd be able to offer a credible alternative when you refuse to use fb in your local association.
November 23, 2025 at 7:44 PM
@jrollans people keep bringing it up and asking about it, but then it usually gets confused with the "mailing list" like fedigroups where you can subscribe to posts that include @groupname. Not really groups in my opinion.

There's rumours of a dormant branch of Mastodon that was abandoned and […]

Logging in with biometrics...
– You can already do that. You just type the password in the field and press submit.
Yes, but...

So it's not necessarily that you don't know it can be done. But you have an idea of what it should be like. If people don't agree that's fine, maybe it's a bad idea, but it's not that you don't understand there are other ways to do it.

Frying an egg on the hot asphalt or in a pan?

I once suggested link preview in a chat app (pretty standard feature), but I was then given the "tip" that if I click the link it will open in a browser.

– It would be nice with self propelled roller skates.

– Oh but you can achieve that if you tie a rope to a car, hold the rope and ask someone to drive the car.

But it's of course looking into oidc for "bespoke" projects. It wouldn't have the multiplier effect I was envisioning though. Again maybe I've got this all wrong as some would imply.

Wow. I still think it would be good if the option was there to use your Fediverse (Mastodon) account to authenticate that you are the user you say you are with Avatar and Name. Nothing more nothing less.

Others are suggesting using Open Id Connect. But then you'd use oidc to authenticate, not […]

We all read different things into this it seems. What would like is authentication. You tell auntie Bertha to register a Fediverse account to join the local coop. Need to log into our Mobilizon site, sure use your Fediverse identity. Need to use our shared Cryptpad to create a signup form for […]

@jrollans I find what you're saying interersting. I wish there'd be Mastodon groups, which is the primary use case for people being "left out" if they're not on Meta in my experience, both my own and what I've heard from others.
November 23, 2025 at 6:29 AM
For "regular people" who take little interest in tech and aternatives, that would make a huge difference.

You can convince to register on one new thing, but not 10 new things, if you try to promote switching from FB groups to Mattermost/matrix, MS/Google forms to Cryptpad, Loops instead of […]

@rusty__shackleford maybe it could be a setting somewhere to open federated content in their right context. And people who really enjoy using Mastodon UI for everything can turn it off (or on)
November 22, 2025 at 6:57 AM
@rusty__shackleford I'm not convinced by that fediverse means opening Pixelfed photos in Mastodon and Loops videos in Mastodon. And getting full length blog posts in your feed. Can you "follow" text bases Mastodon accounts in Pixelfed and Loops? Confusing and not optimal UI.

I posted the link […]
