I always ask for examples, never commission an artist who won't show examples.

Doesn't need to be finished by a specific date either, I just like to know it's been started! :] if you need time to finish, I am MORE than happy waiting!! I'd rather get quality work at a different date than having a rushed piece sooner, you know?

And it doesn't necessarily need to be done by December, I just usually ask to see some type of progress on it being started within a month or two! I just have dealt with a lot of artists who ghost clients, or wait 6 months or more for an update, so that's the only reason

Like, as an artist I can tell you it was real art. 100% real artist. Just extremely lazy and rushed art and not even close to the quality they presented in their examples. ie bad business practice

Unfortunately these were real artists who actually do real art commissions, it was just extremely poor experiences I had and was left with unusable and overly watermarked artwork / animation due to the fact that they completely butchered my characters design and refused to change it.
