I suppose I’d better post something to show that I’m real. 😝 I’m a senior biologist with the US Fish & Wildlife Service and Treasurer of the Central Valley Bird Club. I don’t have a lot of time right now, but let’s see how this goes!
It’s been a struggle sorting through my photos from Botswana. So much is the context, the moment, the experience.

For now, perhaps you’ll enjoy an #antelope assortment?

Central Valley #Birding Symposium field trip Home Is Where the Birds Are: Local Garden Tour. Three wonderful hosts shared how they provide habitat for wildlife. Stockton Garden Club habitat garden. René Reyes’ primarily native plantings. Frances Oliver’s variety of Salvia species and colors.

We’re on a boat! Pardee Reservoir #eagle tour with EBMUD for the Central Valley #Birding Symposium this morning. We saw both Bald and Golden eagles, with the golden in particular a county bird and lifer for two excited participants. ❤️🛥️🦅

I can’t even begin to describe my experience on safari for 16 days in Botswana, so please enjoy this taste while I process. 😅

Yeah we did it. The Hallmark #birding movie with #homemade spicy margs, #canned salsa & #pickled jalapeños, and #friends. No better way to spend a #furlough Wednesday. And yes, he will be a very successful birding guide with those binoculars. ❤️

At it again with At Ease Brewing and the Central Valley Bird Club! No Kings, only Kinglets. #birding #beer #birdsandbrews

Brent and I thoroughly enjoyed the #Sacramento #Archive Crawl yesterday! We visited the Stanley Mosk #Library & Courts Building, the State Archives, and the Sacramento Room at the Central Library. We’ll definitely attend next year!

Now hang on… I just saw a commercial for tires with a lady #birding and they showed a Black-throated Blue Warbler and I could swear the #bird song they played was actually a Black-throated Blue Warbler. Did I just see the most accurate commercial featuring a bird ever?! For tires?!

Obligatory beaver statue selfie after presenting at American River College’s Intro to Ornithology class this morning. Thanks to the humidity for giving my hair quite the frizz. 😂🦫🦅

There's a new guest post on the WOS blog! Konshau Duman writes about his discovery that White-throated Sparrows regularly mimic the chip calls of Golden-crowned Sparrows, opening up new questions about whether calls are learned. #ornithology wilsonsociety.org/2025/09/26/g...

I love that a local #sushi restaurant prominently features #heron beakspear artwork alongside our CA Central Valley ricelands that provide both quality sushi #rice and heron habitat. I also love that I feel the need to share this with one of my absolutely favorite follows, @everyheron.bsky.social ❤️

I found this birding book along the side of the road on the Tamiami trail in the Everglades on 8/25/25. It is so well loved with sightings going back decades. If you're a birder (I am not) please spread the word and hep me find the owner so they can be reunited

Sometimes you need a little push to get out there. Like uncommon shorebirds at the wastewater treatment plant! 🥳 Baird’s Sandpiper that kept sinking into the mud. Solitary Sandpiper dining alone. Greater vs Lesser Yellowlegs. #birds #birding

Why yes, we did just watch 2+ hours of a robot apocalypse puppet musical. How was your Sunday? 🤖🎶😂

Galls are pretty much the coolest. Red cone #gall wasp on Valley #oak and saucer gall wasp on blue oak. ❤️

One more day of #birding before heading to the airport! The Five-Striped Sparrow now qualifies as a nemesis. 🥲 Guess I have to come back! Lifer Red-faced Warbler isn’t a bad consolation prize. 🥰 Also caught a Painted Redstart en déshabillé post-bath. 🤭

Sparrows today at the #SEAZbirdfest in Box Canyon! Singing Black-throated and Botteri’s. Distant look at a singing Rufous-winged for a lifer! We finally turned a Turkey Vulture into a Zone-tailed Hawk. Sibling love at the Thick-billed Kingbird nest. Skunked by Five-striped Sparrow…twice. 🥲 #birding

Night #birding last night in Madera Canyon with the #SEAZbirdfest. We had a great hummingbird show before sunset, with 8 species including this Rivoli’s. We heard both Whiskered Screech-Owl and Mexican Whip-poor-will! On the drive back our guide spotted a bebe western diamondback on the road. 🦉🐍❤️

Today was #birding close to the border at Walker Canyon and Pena Blanca Lake. Monsoon season has been dry and temps are warm, keeping the #bird activity down. Common Black Hawk was a nice year bird. And I always enjoy a Green Heron. #SEAZbirdfest
