I think this is a first in history for a female sports journalist (former sports journalist in my case).
After working with Media and Democracy Project on a piece, a guy wrote me to tell me to “stick with sports.”
Better than being told to go back to the kitchen 😂😂

I think Barcelona saw sunrise pics from NYC this morning and decided to join the party with a bright pink-orange sunset 😅

Regular Google, but yesterday, I was looking for the list of most recent women’s Ballon d’Or winners ( ⚽️). I wanted the link, but it first gave me an AI false summary. The 2024 winner is “not applicable, but this would be the next winner after 2025.” 🤭

The AI overview when I tried to look on Google for the list of the most recent Ballon d’Or winners on women’s side 😂
Notice how 2024 is “not applicable, but this would be the next winner after 2025.”

I love good takedowns of Saudi sportswashing, sexual abusers and those who try to overthrow democracy for their own corruption and grift. One story that does takedowns of all those? Bring it.
And indeed, @willbunch.bsky.social does. Pieces like these are why I subscribe to the @inquirer.com.

Always read Thomas Zimmer.
It’s tempting to be encouraged that Trump appears to be losing some control over some MAGA acolytes and right-wing influencers. Yet many vying for power are more virulently right-wing ideologues than Trump. It’s a dangerous turning point, which could go well or badly.

It was a run day today. I can definitely outrun 95% of the cops.

Blue skies Sunday run over to the cruise terminal & back, plus along the beach.

It was a fun celebration.

The live feature on iPhone is great for catching split second sequences. And this is with a two-year-old model. It got me some cool shots of Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres celebrating after Ferran’s goal/Lamine’s assist, as well as of Fermin Lopez’s goal.

Second half getting ready to kick off. Didn’t hear exact figure, but around 45,000 in attendance. The renovated Camp Nou is supposed to seat 105,000 when done, but a lot of construction left.

A loooot of booing of Nico Williams, who considered leaving Athletic Bilbao for Barça in offseason.
Fortunately, those seated around me don’t know this, but he’s my second-favorite player after Lamine Yamal. 😅
I’m a fan of la selección española far above any club.

Gooool by Lewandowski, with a show by Lamine Yamal dribbling around defenders on way down field.

The last time I attended a game at Camp Nou, I was working for ESPN. It was a Clásico. Pep Guardiola coached Barça w/ Messi, Xavi & Iniesta starting. Jose Mourinho coached Real Madrid w/ Xabi Alonso, Cristiano Ronaldo & Iker Casillas starting. CR scored winning goal.
Lamine Yamal was 4 years old 😄

He did mention it, though not nearly so prominently as in many other things he’s written.

I was at the ELEVA conference on women’s ⚽️ in Madrid, organized by the RFEF. It was great to hear from and meet so many people working in the sport, including pioneers such as María Teresa Andreu. I didn’t know Franco had outlawed women’s fútbol (some still played), and the ban continued until 1979!

Comic by JL Martin in La Vanguardia: the Emperor has no clothes, picturing Donald Trump naked with a small sign “Archivos Epstein” (Epstein files) strategically placed for cover.

THIS is how to write a lead @macchinetta.bsky.social - 7 years after (MBS’s) last trip & Washington & of the assassination and dismemberment of journalist Jamal Khashoggi on his orders …
Trump tira la casa por la ventana para honrar a MBS.

Con ganas de leer este libro que compré en el Panenka Festival, Las futbolistas que desafiaron a Mussolini.

Looking forward to reading this book I bought in the Panenka Festival, the women’s soccer players that defied Mussolini.

I went to the Panenka Fest in Barcelona, & Zuhaitz Gurrutxaga’s monologue was among best I’ve seen. I didn’t know who he was besides former ⚽️ player. He was tremendous, sharing about his 3 years in LaLiga dealing w/depression, anxiety & OCD. He’s now a comedian, and really delivers from the heart.

Pretty much 😬
Corriere & Repubblica in Italy have both been doing some great work. I took this screenshot when in Italy in early June. I got 1-year digital subscriptions to both around then. It was a total of ~ €22, and it helps me improve my Italian along with getting other news perspectives.

Shoot your shot.
I just saw on Threads Magic Johnson posting about being in Madrid. I replied that if he comes to Barcelona, Gata Sports Tours would be delighted to offer him a personalized sports travel experience. 🤭
I also included this photo of him answering my question at Wharton 15 years ago.

Some of my best pics from the #Clásico femenino today. Barça won 4-0. I paid for premium seats in order to get good pictures and content for the sports tourism business I am launching.
Not bad for my 2yo iPhone.

Today’s Clásico femenino attendance tops the high for any game last season in Liga F.
With Camp Nou reopening ASAP, Barça should move big matches there.

It’s so warm out today - 68F/20C air and the water is still above 66F/19C! The beach and path next to it were filled with people.
