Ik ben nu bezig met het hoofdstuk over Japan. Ook weer formidabel hoe snel na de Meiji restoratie Japan in de ban is geraakt van Montesquieu, Locke, Rousseau, Bentham, Mill.. Er is toen een ware explosie geweest van politieke debatclubs.

Ik vind het vooral fascinerend hoe zij dat verhaal over Horton heeft opgevist, terwijl die man zeer snel na zijn overlijden volledig in vergetelheid is beland.

Oh, maar dit is geen obscuur boek. Het werd alom geprezen bij verschijning en stond al lang op mijn lijstje.
