Continuing to have fun with this cast 'cause they all have such a great dynamic together but lemme just shout out this cutie Ayukawa who finished an entire adaptation of Wizard of Oz overnight like it was nothing! It's also the first time we're seeing him smile and eeeee.

Just let Glen be Glen. He's really fun in this and the action was well-done. I just think it's a little too bleak for most people to really enjoy and champion at the moment.

"I'm glad you mentioned A.I. because I saw a theory on social media that rang really true to me. Vince Gilligan hates A.I. (so do I) and the end of the credits for this show say "Made by humans." So the theory is that Pluribus is an analogy about A.I. I spent most of the night thinking about it, and here's where I'm at: It steals all the information ever from its hosts. It caused a virus. It doesn't understand all the variables of emotion or feeling and gets things very wrong. It's a machine thinking it knows better how to save humanity than humans do. It crashes when overloaded. It in incapable of actual creativity and individual perspective. Carol is Vince and all of us creatives who are screaming into the void about how damaging it is to get rid of the need (as Vince has said) to pick up an instrument, put paint to canvas, learn to dance, sing, or act, write your own story, etc. She's fighting against what everyone else is enjoying because she wants her own humanity. These shells of people are not that. I've seen people call her selfish, difficult, unlikable, and maybe she is all those things which, I believe, makes her acutely human. Personally, I love her, and I feel for her in her grief, fear, and utter isolation. I am eager to find out more about Paraguay guy and want to hope she has plenty of time before she's forced to assimilate. She's like the Sarah Connor of creatives! 😉"

Speaking of well-known actors, I failed to mention last week that the man who plays Trip is Tom McCarthy, is the Oscar-nominated director of Spotlight, who also directed Peter Dinklage in Dinklage’s breakout role, in The Station Agent.

To students, to colleagues, and to basically anybody who has found outsized nourishment in a book, I like to offer a different reminder, half-polemic and half statement of the blindingly obvious. It’s just this: whatever its other graces, serious work in English prepares its participants, as I think almost nothing else can, for the perplexities, anguishes, and errant joys of being alive in the world. What does work in the humanities testify to, if not the painful wonder of being a person, being human, among other persons? Spend time with them and you’ll come to find there’s a strange and potent magic in things like novels and poems. They won’t offer you a ready-made blueprint for a world less ruinous, alas; that’s really not their remit. But reading them, investing our imaginations in them, fighting about them, puzzling through them in collaboration with colleagues and comrades and students and friends—this, I think, does an awful lot to adhere us to life, to fortify our attachments to one another and thus to the world itself, even in its bleakest configurations.
