It seems that Disney never really knew what to do with 538 (Nate's take below), which feels like a real missed opportunity. I hope other outlets will take up the mantle, hire those laid off yesterday, and really invest in data and rigor in journalism - which is more important now than ever.

As it turns out, even with a much larger sample size, we're unable to find evidence of a habituation effect for 16-year-olds - on turnout, polarization, or other outcomes. While we don't have sufficient statistical power to rule out small effects, we can rule out the effects from the original study.

When @elisabethgraf.bsky.social contacted me because she couldn't replicate our work, I was confused. But she had found a major error in our code, one which invalidated our entire analysis.

This is obviously a complete nightmare for anyone who does empirical work. Our conclusions were all wrong -
