(Feeling I looked my most Gene Tierney today).

I made myself long gone this weekend: Monterey->Pinnacles->Morro Bay.

Til I can get my preferred portrait photographer to do a promised shoot of me with this Corvair, these’ll do.

I hope, even if I’ll be 3,000 miles away soon enough, that this isn’t the last time i get to visit with them.

I’m angry still that Walter, my great grandmother’s abusive husband lays between mother and daughter.

I talked to Grandma Anne for a good half hour, asked for her blessings for my future plans, shared a shot of rum with my departed matriarchs, then drove down the hill for our favorite seafood.

Luckily my great grandmother was a snob that bought these plots off of Skyline Boulevard some 1,200ft above the Bay and Pacific in 1968, plots that go for $25k a piece now.

The customer service is excellent.

A genuinely kind man named Bell spent 20 minutes helping me find their graves.

My maternal family still doesn’t discuss the cause of death nearly 40 years later.

It seemed important that I go tend to her and my great grandmother Clara’s graves on what is the Hoodoo All Saints Day. I hadn’t been up here since 2011, I barely remembered where their graves were.

There weren't any construction signs on the highway, so his Olds Ninety Eight shot head first into some construction equipment. While we were down there, my (maternal) Grandmother Anne, perhaps the relative I was closest to, passed away.

I’m not big on secular holidays and Halloween is no different for really big reasons.

Scorpio Season 1988 there were two significant deaths. My dad’s father, a man I really didn’t know, died from injuries in a car accident on I-10 in Louisiana.

Two ways I can slice this:

I don’t *do* Halloween the way the rest of y’all do because I more or less, try to present stranger than fiction every day.

I get that’s scary for a lot of you. Whatever.

Again, all the times I've been insecure in my life despite appearances that I'm middle class fancy tell me that health and wealth in this capitalist hellscape are far from guaranteed.

Cook for more than you and yours, scale up/hit me up for ideas (photo of shared Sunday Dinner for ideas).

…especially if we take what resonates the most with us from the past, respect that it’s still present for us while looking with that wisdom to the future.

The passenger side if I’m your best friend is always open for rides

there’s plenty of dark and ugly shit happening all around us. I don’t ignore it at all all the while what keeps me going, hopeful, is that at the end of the day this world is such a marvelous, beautiful place full of wonder and possibility.

“Not saying you should go out and go full mid life crisis and buy a Corvair but also I’m gonna say aesthetically it’s a real good pairing…”

Hit that like button if you think Big Ty should give up being so loyal to Ford Motor Company products and get a Corvair!

If it weren’t for Josh responding to my endless texts about Corvair life, I would have given up long ago. You do get by with a little help from your friends.

All I can say is, Mel is 80 goddamn years old and still rotates like 2-3 Corvairs in and out for service a week.

Corvairs keep you young, clearly.

The weird thing to say is today I mastered one of my favorite drives: CA Route 84 between 280
& San Gregorio.

Did many downhill sweepers in excess of 60mph with no tire squealing.

Fuck your Porsche, drive a Corvair.

(Clearly, first day trip loop to the Delta and back went well).

Thanks to Mel’s Vair Mart (and Mel’s from the same part of Texas as my Flanagan ancestry! Small world!) Grace Lucille drives I’m guessing as close to what any 60 year old Corvair could be as close to showroom.

You can’t beat the smiles per gallon.

Even the ephemeral street portrait someone agrees to is so special in documenting a fleeting connection.

One beautiful person that I’ll always strive to catch what I think is the perfect portrait of is Ted Rees because honestly he’s made sure I’ve seen more of the beauty the world has to offer…
October 4, 2025 at 2:24 PM
The most beautiful faces I’ve met in my life are the honest ones. So goes why I’m probably the harshest self critic about my portrait work. I’m always trying to document some sort of accuracy about feelings.

Been overjoyed to see them land on coffee tables coast to coast. Did this as not to profit from creativity but acknowledge that I’ve gotten lots of love and validation over 15 years of practicing film photography.

There’s just under 20 left. If you want one free of charge, hit me up!
