The appeal of blobs for me vore-wise is

1) the unimaginable amount of people you'd have to eat to get that large

and 2) how embarrassing it is for an independent capable unwilling person to get eaten by an immobile, impossible-to-miss, barely-sentient continent of flab

My European literature class just wrapped up its Victorian unit, which was Frankenstein/Jekyll & Hyde/Christmas Carol, and the common thread seems to be that these are stories about the problems of a hyper-specific place and time that have since been broadly applied and watered out of their meaning
