It's the same old idea that having or doing an academic degree makes a person into something more worthy of being treated with decency and respect... when the truth is that both me/us and the guy who owns the kebab shop nearby probably migrated for similar economic reasons.

As someone who has migrated several times, I can tell you that the answer is very simple: the nice word for immigrant is... immigrant. It's not a slur, it's not offensive, it only has the connotation YOU bring to it.
