How do data journalists get their kicks at home?

Setting up automations to remind us about the dog walker and check whether the dog needs his coat or not.

Fascinating (and terrifying) analysis here from @sonjatutty.bsky.social based on data from Friends of the Earth on the areas most at risk of dangerous heatwaves.

She's mapped the data down to a neighbourhood level.

Is it weird to talk about a map of football banning orders using cutesy language? Probably but also look at the little footballs...

Available now for @radar-ai.bsky.social subscribers - Manchester United fans were arrested the most last season.

As well as stories for your local club, @sonjatutty.bsky.social also created this adorable map.

Outspoken women managed out of an organisation rather than addressing problems.

Tale as old as time.

Totally forgot it was Scottish baby name day (I know right).

As if it wasn’t the end of an era enough, the NRS have finally stopped disclosing the single digit babies🥹

Saw a box of fortune cookies today and thought they might help me decide what to do with my life.

Things have never been more clear😅

There’s an entire channel that only shows back to back Come Dine With Me.

The things you learn when you don’t have a job are truly life changing.

The multiple different email addresses just add to the vibe of “if I didn’t know better I’d think this was a phishing test”😅

Having to set up an account with a new site to request repeat prescriptions and nothing but the highest quality web design here.

Normally being a subhead in the industry press would be a nice thing.

Not today. Thoughts with all of my colleagues who are impacted.

Sorry everyone, just got this comment on reddit after posting an article and I think we can all agree that social media has now peaked and we can all go home✌️

Ema also looked at whether more crashes have happened in urban stretches of the road vs rural.

It's easy to look at our maps from earlier in this series and think that the crashes are fairly evenly distributed - that's why we created a heatmap that highlights the density of crashes around a 1km radius.

Crash data suffers from quite a severe lag due to the level of detail involved so for the first time we've brought that data right up to date by combining it with data from our reporting and police reports.

To put this decision into context - We currently have the vacancy rate sitting at 50%. Of the nine shopping centres we track it currently has the highest vacancy rate.

We added Elgin to the High Street tracking project in October and we've been tracking data for the St Giles Centre. Today they announced they'll be closing, citing rising numbers of vacant units.

📑 Final scores on the board for the Olympia (my local leisure centre) at the end of 2024 - it was fully or partially closed for 35% of the year. 📉

On the bright side this is a dramatic decrease on the previous two years which sit at 96% (2023) and 100% (2022)...

Three students from a data journalism course have contacted me in the last week about an assignment to interview a Sigma award nominee (benefits of being close to the top of the list baby)

Feel like saying yes to all of them and watching on as they all turn in the same thing like this
