This is a company whose value proposition to users is basically "all the world's music in one place", but where they're only willing to pay for one eighth of their catalogue.
In April 2024, Spotify implemented a new scheme: songs with less than 1k streams per year would no longer receive royalties.

The data for 2025 was just released via Luminate, and 88% of songs have been demonetized.

Read it again: 88% of songs on Spotify have been demonetized.

And the best thing about this is that the age verification method BlueSky offers that doesn't send biometrics who-knows-where, i.e. a $0.05 credit card purchase via KidsWebServices, just fails inexplicably.
Happy UK Age Verification week! While I support the general concept, I think the fact that - like with cookie consent and similar laws - leaving implementation up to tech firms means it's basically a disaster. Do I want to upload biometrics to some server in the USA? No, I do not.

I'm not sure why I expected the new Government might be a bit less useless when responding to its own MPs about the proposed legal changes to favour generative AI over the creative industries, but no; utterly vacuous reply.

A tale of two maps - the first is the preferred party in the recent German election, the second is the former West Germany and East Germany. History matters.

For years, the public has called them "fake artists." But internally at Spotify, the program has name: Perfect Fit Content. My investigation, and the first look into my book Mood Machine, is the January cover at @harpers.bsky.social

Just claiming this username in case I need it in future. Not too fond of so-called 'social' media so I doubt I'll be here often.
