I used the quilting pattern block "Crystal Star" as the body of the design. I wanted to refer back to the AIDS quilt that started in 1985 as a memorial and response to lives lost to AIDS.

I wanted to use bandana patterns to reference a bit of queer history: the Hanky Code. The Hanky Code, also known as flagging, is a system of color-coded bandanas used by members of the LGBTQ+ community to communicate sexual interests & queer identity without saying anything out loud.

* Black and brown: Represent marginalized Black people & People of Color (POC) queer communities
* Light blue, pink, and white: Represent trans & nonbinary people
* Red: Life
* Orange: Healing
* Yellow: Sunlight
* Green: Nature
* Blue: Harmony & Peace
* Violet: Represents spirit
