A health insurance CEO, a fossil fuel executive, a corporation will always hurt us more than a trans person or an unhoused person and a leader that understands and articulates that has an enormous power to channel righteous anger toward systemic change.

But there is another option. Left-wing economic populism can defeat fascism, it directs that anger where it belongs; toward the obscenely wealthy and powerful and the structural injustice they produce.

People are tricked into believing that their problems are not created and perpetuated by the powerful, but by the powerless.

Significant economic hardships, inequality and instability can give rise to fascism. Demagogues can use the justified anger that people feel about their material conditions and direct it toward marginalized communities.
