also if you think that riding a bike to work is "atypical" i think you have a very narrow range of life experiences. maybe typical for you is a rolls royce hollywood lifestyle, i don't know, not typical worldwide at all

When you know someone is on £146 a week at their cleaning job and you have to tell them they need £25 in parts ruined purely because they took marketing at it's word and tried to do the right thing it is not at all pleasant. yeah they learned not to do it again. expensive fucking lesson though

a few times i've had to repair bikes people commute on because they heard you have to "oil the chain" and the can of WD40 has a bike on it, and then their chain became bright orange and full of stiff links that made it loud and not shift properly
