I keep seeing these print ads by L.L.Bean and I love them so much.

They’re on brand in an understated and cozy way - and seasonally appropriate during what will be a difficult time for many (while not alienating those who want to indulge in the holiday season).

Even now, not everyone gets it. I’ve heard this “we aren’t in politics” rhetoric for months now, even from peers in the US - it’s maddening.

Celebrated for his large-scale figurative sculptures, Price draws our attention to the psychological embodiment of his fictional characters, highlighting nuanced understandings of social signifiers and predetermined value. Amalgamated from multiple sources, the works are developed through a hybrid approach of traditional sculpting and intuitive digital technology. Price balances methods of presentation, material and scale to challenge our expectations and provide cues for deeper human connection. He encompasses historic constructs with a newness that at first glance can go unnoticed, but that live in the public realm as silent totems for change. Price compels the viewer to consider how and why things are made, embedding references to ancient, classical and neoclassical sculpture alongside a sophisticated understanding of the symbolic power of materials. Sculptures of polished bronze and marble are luxurious and monumental, appearing to be rooted in the canon of 20th Century sculpture, yet the line of conceptual enquiry challenges our awareness of current iconography and the unmediated immortalisation of triumphant figures. His works set out to challenge traditional holders of power, to question provenance and instead bind one human experience to another in a manner that feels inclusive. Since the 1970s he has worked across photography, painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation and performance to develop a highly experimental practice that has profoundly shaped the evolution of Korean contemporary art. He began his career staging avant-garde performances and installations, and his international reputation was cemented at the 9th Paris Biennale in 1975 when he tethered a live chicken to a wooden feeder surrounded by powdered chalk. The traces of its white dusty footprints were conceived as a form of mark-making that transcended the autonomy of the artist to express the transience of our human presence in an ever-changing world. Such attentiveness to the distribution of creative energy between the artist and their materials underpins Lee Kang So’s subsequent interrogation of the very praxes of painting and sculpture, which continues to this day. Drawing upon traditional East Asian philosophical and aesthetic principles, he has developed an intuitive and embodied approach to artmaking. Unsui (Mirror) features two towering sequin sculptures set against the expansive desert sky. Clouds, a recurring motif in Biggers’ work, symbolize freedom, boundlessness, and interconnection. Drawing on Biggers’ study of Buddhism, these clouds — or unsui (“clouds and water” in Japanese) — embody unencumbered movement. Shimmering in the desert light, they evoke a feeling of timelessness and transcendence. Standing over 30 feet tall, the sequin-covered clouds shift with the sunlight and wind. They symbolize change and continuity, forecasting rain and storms while reflecting the interplay between natural phenomena and cultural symbolism. This context grounds Biggers’ exploration of memory and identity within a shared visual and experiential language. Situated at the James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center in Palm Springs, these clouds convey a message of hope and freedom. This historic Black community was established in the 1960s after the forced displacement of residents of color from Section 14, a square mile of land near downtown Palm Springs.
