Devil May Cry

I suck at it, but I respect the vision. I like how transparently it encourages mastery with tons of secrets and the currency system. I skidded by on items, triggers and a prayer but I kinda want to get better. Plot’s lean ,but there’s cute payoffs at the end. It’s cool and confident.

I was gonna say, couldn’t be Shaman King, but it mostly exists there to hype up Hao honestly.

Don’t forget Stardew Valley: inspiration and template to many of those. Insane to me that every platform can try to get it yet no one thinks a higher scale version of it is worth a try.

Castlevania Rondo of Blood

Had some frustrating times but this game rules. I’ll get steamrolled by enemies and traps. Then come back to them feeling the intentionality in the level design and your movement. Like the shortcuts. All the items are useful. OST and art are in top form. Real cool game.

FE Shadows of Valentia

Presentation is immaculate and I adore the cast. With great class balance and mechanical quirks, I found it plays great. Random battles do lose their tailored spark, but it has the best open map. And I really enjoyed the plot ,even with a few endgame foibles. Upper shelf FE.

DK Country

I love the soundscape of this game. Absolute earworms out of even the most mellow, immersive tracks on top of bombastic bangers. And the sound effects tickle the senses. Gameplay’s nice too I guess. Shines at nudging you into secrets. There’s some learning by death, but it’s mostly tight

Haven’t watched My Hero in years and that last bit still got me tearing up.

Ngl, I thought Danganronpa was just this. Then again, ultra despair girls is the only game I’ve ever heard details on.

I just wanted to know what fun thing they’d say and got condemned to aimless wandering the rest of the game.

There is an in game hint giver. If you ever tell them no to a hint though, they assume you know what you’re doing and vanish from the game forever.

I dunno, I feel like most of the boss ass lines they coulda said were given to Strohl. Will is better, but I wouldn’t say it’s immune to the “that’s what you meant ,right protag?” scenes.

Despite not being the best game to play, Soul Hackers 2 will always have Ringo over most of the SMT catalogue. She rocks.

Any in particular? Cuz I often find that platforming related critique feels kinda nebulous? Like it’s often focused on how it feels rather than a clear cut examination of mechanics and design that say an rpg can provide. That’s fair given the goals of the genre , but it hardly feels useful sometimes

My only disappointment with it is that the titular characters are written very much like BK stand ins. Not that any of their lines or jokes were bad ,but it comes with a bit of sadness for me that they couldn’t just do it with the OG duo. But yeah, feels like its detractors don’t actually like Banjo

I’d only say it’s worth it if you straight up love the other 2. It’s got good moments and it’s interesting to examine the roots of the series. But It’s exactly the kind of rpg people tend to rag on, grindy and vague in directing you.

Cracks me up that you brought up the worst enemy in the game too. I never got reliable at dealing with them.

I’m not a smart cookie so I didn’t see the numbers thing til I got on the internet. Thus, it’s Oh-net to me.

Goemon 3 SNES

Yeah, this is peak. I’m floored by how much Mystical Ninja (N64) is in this game. It’s achieved a perfect symbiosis with the side scrolling stages through item based progression and zelda-like dungeon layouts. And their writing only gets more fun while being able to iterate on itself.

Soul Hackers

Personality is the key word here. The character writing is neat and its retro future delivers some well aged themes while being really cool. Then there’s a lot of mechanics that you think would be annoying but actually just pile on the charm and enable your own emergent tales. It rocks

There’s a burger in there so I’m contractually obligated to like this post.

For real though, it all looks good.

I moved recently and when packing all my switch stuff, I realized how much I appreciate them for also having their cute manuals with every game.

Lies of P

I was hooked. Has the sauce in terms of knowing what makes a Souls game fun and just how evil you should be. And they just shower you with tools and weapons. The story and its use of the Pinocchio mythos rocks far more than I ever expected. It’s a vibe and is pretty discernible for Souls.
