It's similar to what you're doing, but the key thing I needed for this to work was setting the texture sample to linear color and material blend mode to Translucent

Not sure if this is 100% what you're going for but I've got an example of a RenderTarget being used as a Material that's then plumbed into a widget. I use this for rotating character select:

Curious what the performance implications are of using the render target vs a camera in UE.

I've tried similar solutions in the past for weapon clipping through walls but could never get it to work well, always ended up having to rely on welding collision boxes at runtime

Try adding the widget as an overlay in the player's HUD (look into the AHUD class). Then this can be accessed through Controller -> HUD -> widget, and you can modify / animate widget based on behavior from player character and controller

The category of failure is not in the technology, it is in the people. People believing that a text generator "understands" anything, that they are "talking" to it, that it "knows" things - these are the failure modes. So, IMO, shitting on this belief is basically a public service.
