Priorities.
How is anyone surviving solely on the single parenting payment in Australia right now?! I’m a single Mum of 2 children aged 5 and 2. I pay $430 per week in rent which mind you is cheap for my area, around $70 per week in childcare. My groceries are usually $300+ to last my kids and I and I’m barely surviving. I often go days without food for myself, I barely scrape by. I’m constantly behind in bills. And I’m struggling to gain employment on top of all this due to being a stay at home Mum for a few years now, no one will give me a chance. I’ve tried applying for loans of even $100 when I’ve been struggling for food and I get declined due to my only income being Centrelink, which I think is ridiculous! If I had other forms of income besides Centrelink I wouldn’t be needing to try do loans. As well as I have had to do 2 “ urgent payments” this year through Centrelink to get by and I think it’s insane you have to wait another whole year before you can do an urgent payment. Sorry to rant, I’m just so frustrated and feel really stuck.

"The secretary of the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations has made a number of decisions to pause parts of the TCF while reviews are underway and is committed to ensuring the system operates as it should." Despite the chaos, the TCF is still issuing suspensions. Antipoverty Centre welfare campaigner Jeremy Poxon was responsible for the freedom of information request that uncovered the 2023 ministerial brief to Tony Burke. "The secretary paused payment cancellations and reductions because of concerns that they're unlawful," Poxon explains. "So, on that basis alone, she should be worried about the number of unlawful payment suspensions we know occur each week." "Amidst this legal scandal, job providers are still wielding the TCF as their own private weapon, threatening and penalising jobseekers for profit." For those with first-hand knowledge of the system, this is no surprise.

If that wasn’t the intention, perhaps consider *why* it might come across that way to people who have no reason to believe we will ever have the luxury of renewable energy in our homes and will bear the brunt of price gouging as a result.

This is a really good scheme, except for one thing. If you’re in energy debt you can’t access it. So the fact that you’re too poor to afford electricity excludes you from the cheap electricity.

About ½ the people on an energy hardship plan are welfare recipients.
Mel is a public housing tenant living in the Adelaide northern suburbs. She is a part-time student and relies on the JobSeeker payment to live. She says: I'm extremely grateful to have public housing but I'm not grateful for the money I save in rent having to go towards my electricity bill. I have a skin condition which often means hospital stays. Heat makes it flare up. Once my house heats up it stays that way for days and is often cooler outside then it is in. I own a very old box air conditioner that i got for $30 at Cash Converters that I have no choice but to run, except when I run it, it costs me an extra $75 a week. That's an extra $150 a fortnight I don't have. But it only cools my bedroom, not the living area. My electricity bill at this time is over $5,500. Being on JobSeeker, I can only afford to put $50 a week towards it, which doesn't cover the cost. So I'm falling deeper and deeper in debt. As a full-time online student this makes it harder as my computer overheats constantly. There are people that will say, "What about the subsidy that was given directly to electricity companies?" And to them I say, my rates went up as soon as that happened, as did other people's, to take the whole lot. Those of us in poverty are more at risk from climate change then those who are not. We already do without so much and our health and safety matters too.

This bit was most jarring, though it’s not the only thing. It’s not like you’re the only one doing this – paid welfare “advocates” & climate campaigners are doing it too.
