I just wrapped some tape around the drive like they did from factory with later Conner based Seagate drives.
Funny enough, the drive work flawlessly, not even a single bad sector…

Also I accidentally left a fingerprint on the top platter, but I was able to remove it with brake cleaner.
The root issue was the gasket between the lid and the drive turned into goo and dripped away, so there was a gap leaving the inside of the drive exposed to the elements.

Reminds me of the 40MB Conner drive in my Compaq Portable III. The magnets were badly corroded and had crumbled and expanded so much that the voice coil got stuck. I had to use a file to sand them flat again.

Hm, interesting. I've only had that issue with Tandon/WD drives before, Miniscribes either did work fully or had some strange controller issues.

A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine had to borrow my 4G router and SIM to be able to work from home, because his ISP was unable to sort out his cable internet for over two weeks… Just went down and never came up again. Sometimes I wonder how some ISPs are still surviving…
